Maybe it's a stupid complaint but this kind of atmospheric, in a few ways realistic (themes and acting) anime suffered a bit from one constant gimmick with no good reason.

I really like those short format, usually without dialogue, artsy anime like this or La maison en petit cubes.

Try anything by Ohfugi, they are all rather old but are all really unique and something you can't find in anime nowadays. Kujira is one of my favourites.
