There is no "behind the walls". The walls are the metaphorical end of the universe.
The universe, while infinite, is at the same time finite. It has a size. What lies beyond? The question does not work. There is no "beyond".
The universe doesn't even have a border. If you did manage to cross it in its entirety you'd just find yourself in the place where you started from.
Similar for the Haibane, with one difference. Their imprisonment in that micro-universe is symbolized by a tangible wall, but that doesn't change the nature of their universe. Imagine the wall to be just a single high tower of 2 meters diameter. The space around them is distorted like around a black hole so that it looks like that tower is actually a wall surrounding everything. If you scaled the wall and took a glance over it, just like with a black hole, you'd see the entire micro-universe (the village and surrounding lands) that you are actually trying to leave behind you.
But everybody knows spatial distortions are not healthy. So don't get too close to the wall.
