Is there a resource/database that says how good a sub-group is and whatever alias' they may have?
I did some searching on the internet and many of the ratings on sub groups seems to vary on opinion based on what anime they've subbed
for example, it's generally agreed by most people that HorribleSubs is a last resort. UTW, Underwater, FFF, Mazui seem to be pretty good, and Commie + gg sub quality varies greatly.
Now these subgroups don't cover all released anime, take for example Rokka no Yusha, that only has Trinity and Puya as sub groups available on nyaa. Which of the two is better? are they just alias'?
Is there a general, objective guide to sub quality? does it all boil down to objectivity and consistence?

You have really outdated information. Fansubbing is dead and HorribleSubs is first choice because FFF will silently drop series and Commie is memesubs. Even BD batches just use edited Crunchy scripts so visual quality is the only difference.

The long story is it gradually happened after script editors for fansub groups were able to use Crunchy scripts instead of a translator, so all groups became derivatives of HS. There was no reason to wait for marginally better video quality and they were often even more localized than HS.

HS' rips are faster, so people just download those instead of waiting for fansubs. And because fansubber can't keep up for obvious reasons, they don't bother much anymore.
Ah yeah, the thing HS lacks is karaoke so you need fansubs if you want that. Even in that case you can archive 1 episode and use HS the rest of the time since it doesn't change.

These memes are added in the NoA localization, they're neither in the original Japanese nor in any other translations, INCLUDING the English translation by Nintendo of Europe.
