It's even worse when you stop to think about how Gohan didn't want to fight Cell and was actually trying to back out of fighting him, despite him not only being the strongest person there (he already surpassed Goku in the RoSaT) and Gohan had previously lost his shit when Cell nearly killed Piccolo and was about to finish off Tenshinhan.
It's hard to accept the bullshit about Gohan not having control, when he's watching his dad, Kuririn, Tenshinhan and Yamcha getting their guts stomped out by Cell Juniors, though it could be argued that Piccolo, Trunks and Vegeta, to an extent could hold their own.
Even then, it took a robot who was designed to murder his father getting destroyed to push Gohan over the edge.

The first Ippo anime is fine, except for the parts about Tyson that was removed for obvious reasons.
But if you give a shit about stuff being changed/removed you should just save yourself the headache and read Ippo from the beginning or don't both, because both New Challlenger and Rising make changes, with Rising being the worst of the Ippo adaptations. Even the two special (Champion's Road and Kimura vs Mashiba) both ended up cutting stuff for time-constraints.
You're better off reading Ippo and using the anime for the fights, because the comedy, drama and fight-specific exposition are all better in the manga. Also, while the art in Ippo changes over the 26+ year run changes, the author is has damn good match-choreography and general art for the major fights, even if I honestly don't care for the results of the majority of the more recent matches. Morikawa is a fucking work-horse.
