From Ayana's perspective, she doesn't know why she was targeted or doesn't think it's important. The assumption did make the story more enjoyable, however. Comparing this story to real life is hard. Never heard anything about sexual violence in school until college, and they were were nothing like what is being portrayed with habitual gang rapes and cigarette burns. Police only recently got involved after Kawamoto's death. They were going to write it off as an accident or suicide until the autopsy revealed preexisting injuries on his arms and legs (the wounds from when he fell into the pit). They decided to follow up on this and figured out he was known to be a punk, so they thought it might have been the result of a gang fight or something.
