Who would you say is the main character? It's easy to say Kyoko, since she drives most happenings. But Akari still gets a lot of screen time, even if it's in jokes about her... not... getting any screen time, those actually never made much sense to me even if they were funny.
Also, from a purely design stand point Akari looks much more like a protagonist than Kyoko does.

The show doesn't really need a protagonist but Kyoko is easily closest

Namori's mum thought it was Yui, from memory, and Namori's head editor thought it was Akari.
Akari is the protagonist of our hearts, regardless.

Pic related is Namori saying she thought it was Kyouko, then Namori's mum saying she thought it was Yui.
This was only two volumes content, though. In the first few chapters Yui had a lot more control over direction, as opposed to being a buffer for Kyouko.

Kyouko is the protagonist in the beginning of the manga, though it wanes into a no-protagonist situation later.
Akari is the protagonist in the anime due to the adaptation. Kyouko's manga protagonism does leak a bit into S1 though.
