The ending you see in the 2001 version is the first ending that Ishinomori proposed, in volume 10 of the manga.
However, the series at this point (still in the 60s) was still very popular among readers, so Ishinomori continued the series, and attempted about 3 more endings later, but the fans rebuked them again.
So a few years before the turn of the millennium, Ishinomori decided once and for all that he was going to end the manga. He named it God's War and wrote drafts and notes for it, but then, in 1998, he passed away leaving God's War unfinished. In 2012, his son and his ex-assistants took his notes and drafts and made a manga out of it.
But this manga wasn't well received either because apparently, they weren't respecting Ishinomori's original ideas. Anyway, the point is that the first ending while controversial, is still probably the most well received one.
I love how gory the Devilman parts were.

Holy fuck I know the series kinda went to shit for me (Maybe it was jsut exhaustion from reading all of the author's works) but goddamn this arc was so well implimented I still love it.
