How many of you guys actually watched all of SDF Macross?
I watched probably thirty episodes at some point but I couldn't continue. It was pretty unbearable. Should I just watch DYRL and then pick up some of the other series as I see fit? I hear so many good things about Macross Plus.

DYRL is a completely different continuity than the series that share the very basic plot elements with each other. I loved SDF all the way through, and really loved how the last 9 episodes dealt with the post-war fallout. You hardly ever get that in an anime.

Klein and Ranka were the better characters, and as a main heroine Ranka was much more enjoyable to watch, as she (and her VA as well) develops as the series progresses.

Quality varied throughout the show, as is the case for most characters in most shows. However, her overall aesthetic was excellent and she was seductive down to the last drop.

Well she's a woman for one, and beautiful women tend to flaunt what they have. Furthermore, it's stated several times in the show that while on stage it's different than in person. It's even made clear when they're together that Sheryl dresses surprisingly modestly in person compared to what she wears or doesn't wear on stage.

Survivor who makes it big is pretty good, and Alto has never dismissed her. It's not anyone else's fault that you can't understand sarcasm and snark can work when flirting.

Klein was better, original Ranka was a wall flower who never grew beyond her dependency of someone else to take the reigns of her destiny--and by the time it actually happened, the show was practically over with most canon relationships and pairings established. She wasn't a bad character, just deeply flawed and she never managed to grow out of her shell until it was too late.
Lastly, Alto wanted two things in his life: the sky and a woman. Sheryl gave him both, while Ranka gave him neither and instead bought her own baggage with her.
