So I decided to re-read the manga and I found that purely in terms of the materials, doujin arc is actually not bad. The problem was all the sidetracking. It would have been better if the Hata focused on the doujin arc and then when it's, get to the other mini arcs rather than have them shafted in between, which resulted in this weird half-assed mash-up. Such a shame because despite a major late comer, Ruka was actually pretty endearing.

Who knows? I don't know how much Hata inspired himself from Greek Mythology and how much he would use in his own story. Midas in HnG also has a daughter (most likely inspired by Zoe) and has this ambitious for gold. Midas also had a famous garden, but nothing out of the ordinary according to the myth and Midas won his powers after making a favor to the gods and receiving in gratification his power to turn everything into gold.
For what I see in the story, the power of the Garden seems to be granting a power or wish (kinda like who Midas got his wish to turn things into gold) thanks to the different reasons for different characters to open the path to it. Which brings the question of why did Nagi's mother enter the palace and what was her wish and what does Mikado, Athena and the rest want with it.
