Now I'm not salty about sales, because Slayers was made at a very different time than Index was. The LN scene hadn't exploded to where it's at now, and we didn't have autists posting chapters in advance of the release date.
But Slayers core story - it's main story - is tightly paced. Lina gets wrapped up in some shit as a result of adventuring, runs afoul of a Mazoku, BTFOs that Mazoku, which gets her noticed by MORE Mazokus. Eventually this culiminates in a world war which she and her friend end, and then they head off into the sunset. After this ending the author wrote a bunch of wacky sidestories for fun.
Index, on the other hand, will not be ending any time soon. Like western comics it constantly introduces new characters and plotpoints, some might say an excessive amount of them.
