I don't understand why any author pulls the bullshit amnesia card especially halfway through the series. It's honestly made me drop TG from one of my favorites to "I read it in hopes it can be good again". Literally no reason for it to not be Kaneki willingly helping CCG or being forced into it.
As for SNK, I highly doubt sales were high until the anime release when it bolstered. The same could be said of OPM but people were also hyping that series more than the SNK manga so who knows.
