There are things you can't fundamentally change about Fate/Stay Night. Fate/Zero is a dark tragedy with adult characters in a situation they have long prepared for. Fate/Stay Night is about a bunch of high school kids with magic powers with a lot more comedy and sexual humor. Those are things inherent in the original source, and it's silly to pretend that Fate/Zero is more popular that Fate itself as an overall franchise, because it's not. There are tons of Fate/Stay Night fans who have no interest in seeing the material dramatically changed into something totally different.

He fucks King Arthur, they defeat the "ultimate hero" (shounen bad guys are always the pinnacle of the MC's goal/profession) with the power of love (BBEG is in love with MC's love interest, because that's what happens in shounen) and they share a tragic love.
UBW route
>Another shounen adventure story focused on talking all about Shiro's ultra cool powers and his harsh but even cooler mentor character (who is MC from the future WHOA) who get a cool death scene. Also sickly girl dies (secret loli oneechan) because you've got to do that, except she is MURDERED by BBEG and the BBEG is then defeated by the MC who has the one impractical special power that can defeat near invincible BBEG because that's what you do in shounen
And then we have the Heaven's Feel route
>A story about a guy's crush who is secretly raped every single day by her family and has been impregnated by her grandfather. MC goes to give his used goods lover an abortion but is stopped by a priest who is against abortion like any good christian is. MC doesn't give a shit about god and he and the priest settle it with MANLY FISTICUFFS and the MC beats the shit out of him better but just barely and then he aborts his girlfriend of the rape baby and then she moves into his house
Heaven's Feel is clearly the more sophisticated, superior story here.

I'm starting to think Fate route Shirou was actually better than UBW, holy shit he sucks. It's like in exchange for getting competent in combat he turned into an incredibly shitty shounen protagonist.

It´s also a pain in the ass to read because Nasu has no concept of pacing and the story wades glacially towards the end until it gets interesting.
You see by the end of F/Z I was back to thinking that the Fate story is ultimately hollow. F/SN goes for a more "idealistic" and shounen-esque which falls rather shallow. You basically follow a story about Shirou's life lessons: What he has to do, what he can't do, what he wants to do and what he's going to do any ways.
All main Fate heroines where created for the sole purpose of pandering: A Loli(Illya), a Tsundere(Rin), a Kuudere(Saber) & a Slut(Sakura).
In turn F/SN is pure fanservice on every level, even if it is some of the best and most eloquently presented fanservice in the business. Type-Moon does a good job of attaching a veneer of depth to it, but ultimately this is a glorified RPG that fetishises moe, GAR, and GAR-moe for its own sake. This is about selling VNs and Blu-rays, not telling a story that has any real meaning. But it seems its better to convincingly pretend you’re telling a meaningful story than to not even try.
