Obviously everyone's coping method is different.
Personally watching happy shit just makes me feel like I'm fooling myself.
I prefer watching depressing anime to let out all the emotions that I've kept depressed inside.
Sometimes I'll watch the last two episodes for fun. I love the artillery sounds and effects.
When I'm bored, I'll watch the whole series.

Whenever I get pissed off or sad and I try to watch some happy SoL where nothing goes wrong, it only makes me feel worse. Watching/listening to depressing shit is good to either sympathize or feel better that your situation isn't as shit as theirs.

I only ever watch anime when I'm depressed.
It tends to make it worse.
There are a lot of lessons that this series has either taught me or reinforced in me. And the nostalgia softens the blows.
