Miyuki is absolutely cringe-worthy with her onii-samas every minute and overall flat character that does nothing. Tatsuya is a stu who is an expert at everything and all his flaws exist to only make him look cooler. The side characters are more interesting than Tatsuya who is a robot. Too much technobabble and little action. Voice acting is uninspired, emotionless despite the all-star cast. It's a nippon banzai anime where the sole baddies are chinks.

Well Satan you see, it's so popular in Japan that the hatewagon over here on /a/ that's in charge of bashing average stuff that gets big decided to let loose on mahouka.
I enjoyed it, but honestly Onii-sama is just so amazing at everything and his badass mysteries that keep piling onto each other to make him even more of a badass just turned it into an unintentional comedy about gary stus for me. Sort of like Sakamoto but that was done on purpose.

Pretty much my opinion of the series. It seemed like it was trying to be Full Metal Panic in the Negimaverse with GITS aesthetics, but Tatsuya himself is just boring and there's pretty much nothing to get excited about whenever he shows up.

But you have to make them interesting in their omnipotence. Onii-sama has no personality and is defined entirely by patting Miyuki on the head and pulling out plot devices. I´d rather have a "weak" character (in terms of power level) that has an interesting personality and is interesting to watch him struggle than a "strong" character that has no personality whatsoever and is completly boring to watch except in cool action scenes.
I want a character to be strong because of a reason. They shouldn´t just be super strong because they are Gary Stus or because of the power of friendship. They should just train.
Put some drama in there and don´t just solve every conflict easily.

Has Onii-sama ever been challenged? I know Yakumo the ninja master can defeat him in magic-enhanced hand to hand, but by all accounts he is completely untouchable in actual magic use. Characters that can do no wrong in their stories are boring. Every female character wants him (including blood relatives), every male character is inferior to him, he's more intelligent than the rest of the cast and more powerful than them too.
Perfect characters are boring and stagnant throughout their story, imperfect characters are at least somewhat relatable and have room for growth.

The technobabble is actually one of the hallmarks of this series and definitely one of the best things about it. The worldbuilding and magic as science is well done and one of the best implementations of Sanderson's law. The problem with the anime is that you can't just include a little technobabble here and there and have it make sense. It's all or nothing since it builds on all the other technobabble. In an anime this won't work since it'll just be boring so they should have cut it out but then mahouka is just your average high school magic show. In the LN it works because the author can easily weave in all the explanations and exposition as appropriate. The other problem is that most of the humor was also left out of the anime. Mahouka is serious and does take itself seriously but the anime overdid it. The LN does have a lot more humor and Tatsuya's internal monologues are amusing which the anime leaves out.

Like I said, I liked the application of magic theory and the practical application thereof. I actually thought Mobile Suits referred to the walking tanks the Chinese used at first, then I realised it was the flying suits.
And the lack of internal monologues is a shame, it would make him a hypercompetent Kyon rather than a boring beatdown dispenser. I'd prefer that to what we got.

The same. Most of the side characters scenes were toned down or omitted. Not as bad as Mayumi I felt but still. Even Miyuki's character was messed up a bit. The anime overemphasized some parts of the LN while leaving out important info that would have given a more balanced presentation. Thus we end up with all the stupid shit from the the anime that's listed in this thread.
Most of the humor in the LNs come from Mayumi, she loves trolling and is so masterful at it, Tatsuya' trolling, Erika's shenanigans, Tatsuya's internal monologues, Mayumi and Mari double teaming Tatsuya for great hilarity and Miyuki's craziness. Almost all of that was left out of the anime.

I never bought Mayumi's claim that she sees Tats as a little brother. Her justification:

Wary of falling into a trap, Tatsuya replied cautiously, but Mayumi laughed lightly.

Ignoring the first one for now, wouldn't the latter two only occur under conditions that Mayumi had created herself? Tatsuya thought but didn't verbalize.
"You address me with the proper honorifics, but in reality you're not being overly polite either. I thought you were a cold person, but you still go along with my selfish requests, so I think this is what it would be like to have a younger brother."
Which strikes me as odd, as her relationship with her little sisters (and father) is very formalized from what we've seen. This is in contrast to the nicknames she has for the Student Council, and the familiar terms she regards Tats. The type of intimacy she's looking for (or calling ideal), if her interactions with the rest of her family are a clue, wouldn't have really manifest in a familial relationship; Tatsuya's apparent coldness, but willing to go along with her selfish demands wouldn't be interpreted in the same way. Instead of "this boy who is considerate, and selfless deep inside", it'd be nothing more than "the little brother who begrudgingly fulfills his familial obligations to his older sister." Mayumi doesn't want Tats to help her because he's her little brother, she wants him to help her because he wants to. She doesn't really want a little brother, but a more intimate, equal relationship.

It kind of is, maybe. Last volume Tatsuya and Masaki hunted and took care of Zhou while invading a military base. Zhou's death was weird, he blew himself up when cornered and suggested he can come back to life maybe at another point. Volume ends with the Yotsuba side branches discussing Tatsuya and whether he passed the test or not. Maya says some lie about them not being siblings. So the next volume may or may not deal with Tatsuya having some kind of conflict with the Yotsuba. After that looks like the 10 clan meeting.

Now, you might hope for a crossover between Mahouka and another popular show. That could happen. The authors of both Sword Art Online and Mahouka collaborated on a crossover story and there should be a tank coming out for it along with 4koma and other art inside.
