Hoshi no Umi was definitely the best arc of this series. The rest of the TV series had every single character lacking a sense of urgency.
End of the world plans or imminent threat in front of them and they just converse normally or don't care because it's not actually affecting them yet.
It might be an issue with the source material having a lot of dialogue or that the show is supposed to be more light-hearted than what it was portrayed to be, but it resulted in an anime which was presented as serious but with nothing actually happening. I think it's a problem with the director not fleshing out the scenes well enough which makes them dull and banal.

I just finished Hana no Uta and fuck me I wish I saw this chart ahead of time. It did seem like they skipped an entire series arc but now it means I still have more episodes to watch. I can't believe I missed this wen it was airing, definitely a hidden gem.
Anyone know just how much the anime, OVAs included, covers? I just started the show and when I finish it I don't want to be lost when I'm trying to find out where the anime leaves off.
I do so love this show.
