The focus on the next generation made as much sense as Naruto becoming Hokage to me. Of all the fluctuating themes and writing Naruto had, the emphasis on "next generation" always tended to pop up, especially with that Will of Fire thing. In chapter 3 Naruto understood why he liked her when she said she wanted Sasuke's acknowledegement. You can interpret it as him liking that she wanted acknowledegement in general, but you can also interpret it as him wanting her because she wanted Sasuke's acknowledegement in particular and Naruto wanted to best him at everything.
