Where's the borderline between regular dark and just plain edgy?

Bottom : a teenager gets crushed for literally no reason except "Gendo was a dick who didnt want to turn off his toy" and to make the protag understand he HATES EVERYTHING

Edgy is something like AgK, It tries way to hard and comes off as immature.
The bottom scene was a pivotal point of character and plot development, while the top scene was just there for shock value

Madoka's problem is that it doesn't spend a sufficient amount of time building tension and human emotions before executing its darkness. Poor writing, poor execution, and cheap tricks. Edgy.

There is a fundamental difference between suffering to establish some broader theme, and suffering simply for sufferings sake.
Of course, few makes this distinction, and certainly no one on /a/ does or really knows how to. Which makes it practically worthless.
