The sci-fi bits are good but they're here to develop the characters, especially Haruhi (closed spaces, celestials, reality bending powers, etc)
But yeah I wish we got to see ESPers wars and shit like that. There's more sci-fi and conflicts between factions in the next LNs though. Especially the scenes where Kyon meets Fujiwara, Kuyoh and Tachibana, shit's so tense.

Novels 5 to 11. They're pretty good, it may be a bit hard to get into it without Sugita's God tier voice acting and Kyoani's visuals but there's some great characterization and developments (especially for Kyon, Haruhi and Nagato). It's easily on par with S1 and S2, and movie-tier a few times.

It's also a comedy/SOL so there's no reason to expect drama/sci-fi all the time.
The spaceship-game episode had some great OSTs/visuals and served to develop Nagato's character before Disappearance. It's also pretty fun.
The mysterious island episode develops Haruhi and Kyon's relationship, showing how much they trust each other. It also introduces the Tamako brothers and the maid, employees of the agencies, who come back later.
The school festival is probably the most significant episode for Haruhi's character. It's my favorite.

And of course, it's the first and only appearance of sliders in the anime, the only group of supernatural things from Haruhi's speech on the first day that didn't have a representative in the SOS Brigade.
