Killing a ship isn't going to break anyone's headcanon, it's not like they have to sink their own girls. But all the personality changes they've made to popular characters like Kitakami, Kaga, and Shimakaze will. The Japanese fans already treat the anime on a scene by scene basis, so Diomedea can try whatever they want.
