at around 2009-2010, when only bakemonogatari had been released, it was really considered one of the smartest anime around, if not the smartest. the witty dialogue, together with the art style and the music made it something that only people with acquired taste liked. there wasn't a single anime at that point which had this much zeitgeist albeit having a supernatural setting. so people with lesser intelligence didn't understand it and started shitposting in bake threads, thus gorespammer happened and so on.

don't forget that bakemonogatari almost single-handedly launched a new trend in anime towards more self-awareness of the characters. harem anime until then remained in a bubble and was mostly for even a niche audience of otakus, but bake took the harem story out of context and broke, so to say, the fourth wall.
i've been saying this since 2010, senjougahara is a post-tsundere. i think now people are finally starting to understand what it means.
