Everything but the basic necessities is pretty expensive, and even the basics are probably increasing in price because no one wants to bother churning out level 1 meals and selling them for pennies when they could be making badass high level food that probably gives buffs and shit.
And everything near the city is pretty low level so the loot is mostly pretty shit. It actually takes quite a bit of time to travel now that it isn't a game anymore, so if you want to kill stuff for gold you either slay trash around Akibahara and probably earn relatively close to a minimum wage job, or spend a day or two going to a higher level(and riskier) area to earn more.
Also, the problem isn't really that people are poor and can't afford anything, its that they have no reason to do anything else. Even if they did go kill monsters all day for their gold, it just means they're adding money to the economy without adding value and nothing would really change because the currency would inflate to where the new baseline is people that grind trash all day instead of people who sit around and do nothing. It wouldn't fix the actual problem, which is a large portion of the population not contributing anything.

All you need to do is kill about six or seven goblins a day, I think. That will drop you enough gold to live in a decent inn for a day (food will probably vary more).
So one solid day of bashing level 20-30 trash could probably net you a week of living relatively comfortably (since the inns, and thus accommodation, won't have had price alterations thanks to the fact that they're run by Lander innkeepers - at least presumably they aren't skyrocketing in price).
A one-day or two-day work week is pretty cushy. That doesn't even get into the players who built up a fortune in items and gold over years of play.
