I'd say the worse dub to how good the show actually was (like a ratio) award probably goes to Mawaru Penguindrum. Excellent show, horrific dub. Another one that got me was Medaka Box's dub. No, if Zenkichi sounds like Adam Blade from Needless you are doing something wrong. Even the people that did MedakaMENT (the abridged series) dubbed it better. That said, Kumagawa was actually pretty good, so they got that (his entrance at the end of episode 12 of Abnormal was as good as you could expect it to be) right.

You know I'd go as far as say any dub after like 2010-2012 is competently done. Like there's no guarantee that it'll be good, but it won't be horribly, ear rape bad or kung-fu movie hilarious bad. At worst it'll illicit a giant "meh" response. You get some that are surprisingly good imo.
But if you rather listen to the Japanese VAs then do so. Most times they're pretty good on their own right save for a few examples of "they're obviously only doing this for a paycheck."

Anime is intentionally corny and over the top because that's what's nips consider to be good acting. To most Western ears it's not desired so when done in English/your native tongue it'll sound over the top and cheesy.
Mediocre voice acting is a small price to pay for having the luxury of not reading and just watching, but generally what I do is I watch the first episode subbed and dubbed to see which is better and base my decision off of that.
Easily the worst thing about dubs is the lack of variety in voice actors, after you watch enough dubbed anime, even if its a good one you're gonna tired of hearing the same voice actors, because you begin associate certain voices so strongly with a character, and its weird hearing goku in berserk for example.
Shows like cowboy bebop prove that dubs can work and be just as good if not better than original, but more often than not they are mediocre at best.

I said that there is a difference between GOOD over the top, and BAD over the top. This applies to English, which is what we're talking about. The problem is that they are trying to emulate the Japanese way of over the top acting, but in English. It doesn't work. You can't take another languages inflections and apply them to your native one and expect it to come out right, especially since the original is an Asian language and English is obviously not.

Thats just not true, I've been plenty involved with characters, whether its subbed or dubbed. You just don't want to believe that you can enjoy an anime without the original voice actors, but its still very possible, most people fell in love with anime by watching them dubbed on television, even if they switched entirely to subbed later, dubbed was good enough to make them want to dig deeper into anime.
