I recently re-watched the anime and caught up with the manga. I hope you all read the manga, since it's somewhat better than the anime.
The manga has some really good iyashikei aspects and doesn't shy away from showing some darker parts of life, whereas the anime is pretty much panel-for-panel adaptation of mostly the funny bits. Usually 4koma adaptations are more healing than the source material, but here it's the opposite.
And the art is really damn good. It's a prime example of an artist choosing a cartoony style because of his preference, not because of his abilities.
On it's own the anime is nowhere near similarly themed series like Sketchbook or Hidamari Sketch, but if you factor in the manga, it stands with them as an equal.

It's actually reasonably solid. It's mostly absolute basics and some brief art history, not much to fuck up there. Shit, some of the stuff they do in high school I only did in University studying architecture.
