no it isn't. it's a slice of life with political, social and economic critiques thrown in. and a topping of the human condition as well.
didn't make it a bad anime. it's just the premise of the show was superfluous to what the creator wanted to convey. i enjoyed it personally. i was just expecting more in terms of hard science and actual technical issues related to space travel. one of the series selling points is that they had actual japanese space program personnel advising. but all that ended as mere window dressing.

Part of that is because the manga was very soft sci-fi. The director decided for the story and tone to work in the transition, it needed the harder setting. The science of it was pretty much immaculate, and I liked seeing the hard sci-fi world from the eyes of those in it rather than being taken on a tour of it. Still, I get how you'd be disappointed if you were sold on a JAXA-approved series about the trials and tribulations of space, even if it does feature elements of them.

Nah. Humans will probably never become a spacefaring race because it's a lot harder than most imagine. Unless we reach the age of augmentations and cyborg bodies, it's just not possible. The best chance humans got is terraforming and colonizing Mars in hope that it change completely how humans think about themselves when we're no longer all bunched up on one damn rock.
