Certainly. It's also a side effect of the aims of the series. It wanted you to accept the characters as realistic and human, and this dictated every element of it. Most of the characters do fit an archetype, but unlike most characters they are not defined by it. For instance, Tanabe is a tomboy but you certainly don't think of her as 'the tomboy' when you think of the character. The archetypes they fit are a result of the characters, the characters are not the results of archetypes.

I like Chie and consider her very well written (in the games) and reasonably well fleshed out (once again, in the games). She is still visibly the result of somebody in Atlus deciding 'the player's party needs a tomboy'.
