It's popular because it's a manga about adolescents (target audience) dealing with problems that normally plague them by adding a fun assassination metaphor twist to things. If you think this manga is anything (or trying to be anything) more than a story of learning and growing you're looking at it wrong. It's a character driven manga, hence the story itself seeming like it's not moving very much. I know we're all interested in what Korosensei's deal is, but frankly his past is not the main focus of AssClass, it's the students.
It's fine if this sort of thing doesn't captivate you, but I think it's pretty obvious why it's popular for a Jump manga.

Just finished the entire manga in 2 days so yeah I'm looking forward to seeing it animated. This manga is the first where all the friends really seem like real friends. It just has a certain atmosphere. Even though it doesn't have that "nakama" theme to it, they feel closer than the One Piece and Fairy tail characters that focus on all that.

Very good. So far my AOTS candidate. The art is top notch, as is the OST/VA. The animation is pretty fluid and dynamic, I really like it. The story is interesting, and the writing is up to par. Only the OP is not quite to my liking, but the amazing ED compensates very well.
