They've streamlined the games so you don't even need to grind anymore, unless you want to just grind EVs, which isn't even that important in the main game. You can pretty much use literally any pokemon and win now.

Increasing exp gains just takes the enjoyment out of the game I find - even the regular gains in X and Y for example made it too easy, never mind the exp. share bullshit.

I'm almost certain you couldn't in Red and Blue version from trainers alone. I was a moron as a kid and only used my starter the entire game. I beat the Elite 4 with a level 88 Blastoise and a whole lot of full recovers and ethers.
The only pokemon I wasn't able to beat the entire way through was my rival's Venasaur in the fight before Victory Road. Although, the AI was so retarded at the time that I was able to beat it with a level 16 Bellsprout because it kept spamming poison powder and failing.
