I instruct a first year physics/engineering students lab experiment in my university. Before every experiment, the students have a short (15-minute) quiz on the relevant material. This time, I decided to draw them a Miyako to cheer them on.And yet no one managed to answer the third question. I guess even Miyako couldn't inspire any competence within them.

Second year industrial engineering students who literally can't correctly write the energy conservation equation for a fucking cart pulled by a string attached to a falling weight? It has everything to do with them, and nothing to do with the difficulty of the question (which is so easy I would hesitate giving it to 10th grade students).

Why don't you ask them to derive energy conservation from the symmetries of the Lagrangian of the system a la Neother's theorem? That'll really show them the actual underlying principles.

I don't think industrial engineering students know what a Lagrangian is. This was a total beginner's simple mechanics experiment.
This reminds me though, a few weeks back I did get one lab report that mentioned that energy conservation arises from time translation symmetry. I was so impressed I gave them a few bonus points.

Oh, I'm aiming for the high energy department too. But my main field of interest is actually foundations (information, measurement, the nitty gritty of QM, etc).
I'm only a first year grad student though. Sometimes I'm horrified they let me teach anyone, but then again you don't have to be some kind of expert to show students how to pull a cart attached to a string.

That's a good one. Comes in useful in quantum computing and what not. I'm mainly interested in the very technical mathematical details (Wightman axioms/functions, non-perturbative quantization, Yang-Mills problem, etc.).
To be honest if you're a grad student you should be able to tutor at least introductory courses that specialize in your area (QM or otherwise). Also if you're familiar with a specific professor he can pull strings to let you tutor things in other departments (real analysis, for example).

In my university they only let doctoral students TA (except in the lab), so this is all I have for now. Still, it's a good experience.

Of course it is, but teaching is a good experience, plus it gives me a little extra cash. Also I haven't started any real research yet, I'm still working through the basic grad school courses and talking with professors, etc.
