The "universe"(understood as Shinju) is getting killed by vertex every few hundred years or so, and then it gets reborn a new. Each "timeline" is slightly different, but the beginning and end are always the same.
The survivors from each "universe" create the Taisha in the new one, and keep the cycle going.
