Just go to a bar that sells a great choice of whisky and drink yourself through the menu (of course only 2cl shots) You will soon find out the cheaper whiskey's will have less taste, worse aftertaste and smaller bouket and won't be smooth compared to the "better" ones. (But there can also be cheap "good" whiskey, this is why you should just try them all)
Most important thing is to properly drink it. Not just chugging it down, but keep it in your mouth and let it get to body temperature, exhale and inhale trough you nose to get the full bouquet etc.

I also don't appreciate bourbon (yet). I have not tried a lot of bourbon besides Jack Daniels and like three others and I find the extreme Vanilla taste displeasing. I drank a fair share of scotch and Irish whiskey thou.
Also really try to warm up the whiskey in your mouth (takes quite a little time) this changes the entire experience. I also thought Cognac just tastes sharp, but then Remy Martin suddenly tastes like heaven :3

It's pretty damn nice, definitely worth the expense.
I'm stuck with my parents again for medical reasons and it sucks having to sneak around at night (noisy floors and they sleep in basement) and not even being able to smoke weed in the house whereas otherwise I could just turn on my air filter and not give fucks.
But you'll have to remember to visit friends on occasion assuming you have any or the solitude will get to you eventually.
