Previous thread reached bumplimit.
Will anyone care to put up a improved database? Mangaupdates was good only because there was no alternative. Not since it died, we should come up with a newer improved manga database.
>>
>>115789807
Care to inform why people use it? It looked a severely archaic site of the 90s.
>>
Have we heard anything from the actual staff? I am all for a good panic but the lack of information is making me hesitant to go into panic mode.

Mangaupdates has gone down before and recovered

>Will anyone care to put up a improved database?
No because MU never released their database even when encouraged after the DMCA debacle a few months ago.
>Mangaupdates was good only because there was no alternative.
They were good because of their scrapers and bots pulling in new releases before anyone else
>Not since it died, we should come up with a newer improved manga database.
Will be hard to accomplish.
>>
Have you actually thought the source might be because of hosting server problem?

Normally, if a website down due to legal reason, they would put announcement on the main page stating whatever reason.

Now stop making stupid baseless assumptions that will lead nowhere, except panic, and start using your tiny head.
>>
>>115789964
> scrapers and bots pulling in new releases before anyone else
No. MU is fully user based. They don't have any bot. User/scanlation group adds a release which then gets checked by a mod and then it gets marked as a new release.
>>
Does rlstrackr just scrape Mangaupdates?
>>
Why would MU be taken down anyway? They weren't hosting any content themselves right?
>>
>>115790020
You were clearly not around when the manga division of bakaupdates was created. There were several alternatives back then but thanks to practices similar to mangafox they killed off all competition.
>tfw you used mangaupdates when they still allowed download links to individual releases

Why is there both #baka-updatres on rizon and irchighway, both have like over 60 users.

Which is the real IRC?
>>
>>115790129
Well, that's news to me. I wasn't into the manga scene back then so yeah you might be correct. But still, currently it's 100% user based.

Japan is getting smarter if they're the reason for this outage.

>>115790258
Really? It's been awhile since I used MU for an actual link. That leaves them pretty much completely insulated from any form of legal action.
>>
>>115790287
All that case did was show everyone who's interested in taking down MU that they'll comply with any DMCA letter they get whether they have to or not.
>>
>>115790287
If they're in the US it would protect them from a takedown, at least a permanent one. That said, it should be kept in mind that DMCA claims generally place the burden of proof on the accused party.

Some people with their shitty baits and alternative crap suggestions don't realize that MU has the most extensive sorted book database.

For scanlator/moonspeaker it is the perfect place to go window shopping and finding cool/weird Seinen books.

Mangaupdates Global Site Downtime
All,

The recent downtime was (is still) being caused by our host. It turns out that one of our IP addresses in our virtual network has stopped responding to requests on ports 80 or 443.

I've moved mangaupdates.com to a different IP and updated DNS, but it will take up to a day for the DNS updates to traverse the globe and become effective for everyone.

Sorry for the trouble. We're sending in a support ticket, so maybe they can help us figure out what's wrong.

It's easier and faster if you're a faggot, and no, it does not use less bandwidth unless the hosting server optimizes the images afterwards and potentially harms the quality of the image, you're still downloading and caching the image, ALONG with all the html, jquery/ajax/javascript and stylesheets and god forbid flash/java objects horseshit on the side each time you go for a new page.

To summarize, online reading is for faggots.

Hello everybody, I'm looking for romance mangas, since lately I've had too much action and gore in general. Before you suggest I look in tags I've already looked through many tags, maybe 20+, before coming here, from Male Lead Falls in Love First to Strong Female/Male Lead and I've only found 1 or 2. I will try to be broad yet specific as possible. I've also left my reading list and complete list public just in case it would make it easier smile

Themes I'm looking for at the moment:
- Male lead falls in love first/male lead's unrequited love becomes requited
- Male lead is not extremely possessive, but does get jealous and pursues female lead in a non-creepy fashion
- Female lead doesn't blush 24/7 or becomes an idiot after being confessed to or pursued
- Female lead is sensible and doesn't desperately want a boyfriend because all her friends are getting one (can't believe how many of those I saw)

... with preferably the protagonist doing the ripping of limbs, and not having it done to the good guys.

Obviously, we have Berserk (the only turn off here is that the brutality also happens to the Protagonist's side), I think Bastard! had some brutality... Jackals and Riki-oh are other titles that tend to come to mind. And there's one other but I can't remember its name for the life of me that was very brutal...

Anyways, other suggestions for titles where we have the protagonist (preferably... not so much a fan of seeing the good guys loose their appendages, though I suppose gotta take both the good and the bad) going and ripping people limb from limb and have a lot of blood spewing?

If only scanlators bothered making a standard naming scheme for their shit we'd have a way easier time automating when a new chapter comes out, even simple keywords would do it without any complicated regex, shit.

why must they make this shit complicated.

THIS! Mother of fucking God it's like they're doing it on purpose, next time I see a release named "ch49.zip" I'll tell them to fucking convert the entire string to fucking base64, because there'd be no shitty difference figuring out what the fucking manga is.

There's that, but on the other hand, it would be easy for _anyone_, including different DMCA-spewing faggots. Look at whatCrychyrolldid to MU in the past, and what some shits did even earlier with removing links to chapters and such.

Are we still talking about making a new database?

I started making a dia for a prototype over at https://github.com/MilesWilford/BeyondMangaUpdates

So far it's just sketching, but I do want serious thought on this. MU is supposedly coming back - they claim it was just ISP/DNS issues (probably a DDOS), but honestly... we need a robust alternative yesterday.
>>
>>115793270
It's not working.
>>
>>115803283
Apparently some people are already working on this. Or maybe it's just another new site
See
>>115790087
>>115790234
>>
>>115803439
Oh good, more fragmentation. Just what manga needs.
>>
>>115803439
Starting with a MU scraper is fine and dandy, but it still doesn't fix the underlying problem - MU is an achilles heel for the entire scene.

Clearly I missed out on some stuff while asleep.
>>
>>115803283
I think manga db and scanlation releases db should be developed separately
>>
>>115803439
Damn, was that thrown together yesterday?

Wish I could see the beta.

>>115803562
Yup, it is exactly what manga needs. Manga Updates is the basket in which we're holding all of our eggs. We need more alternatives. Designed intelligently, they should be able to mirror each other's updates easily enough, but taking down any one of them shouldn't bring the whole scene to a crawl.

>>115803670
They can't be overly separate because otherwise you won't be able to track something like a changing manga name, weird chaptering issues (inevitable, given the disorganization of the scene), and other nonsense like that. Some of us can be bothered to read through every single release every day, but I respect the fact that others can't be assed. Any release db needs to have a fully trustworthy reading list option, and the only way to preserve that is to get a feed of activity about the series (changing names, new releases, status changes, et cetera). Which gives me more ideas for shit that needs to be tracked.
>>
>>115803577
>>115803283
To be honest, something like that would need commitment, which I can't at this point of time.
There was some anon in the last thread.
Check
>>115790131

>>115803670
Seconding this.

>>115803562

>>
Someone during the MT fiasco claimed to have scraped MU, but that was probably a lie.
>>
>>115803283
If you actually go through with it, I'd suggest keeping it all on Github
>>
>>115803824
I think it was Sakisan, for the sake of tags
>>
>>115803826
Building a database isn't terribly hard, and making a prototype is easy in comparison. Populating it with data and giving it a surrounding webapps is hellishly difficult and I just don't have the skills or experience to do it right now.

I just want to strike while the iron's hot. By the end of the week, MU might be live again and folks will already be forgetting how broken the entire system is.
>>
>>115803824
I heard someone in the #madokami IRC saying they scraped MU. Not sure if its a full scrape though.
>>
>>115803283

This is probably another vaporware project a la Woxxy's MT replacement, but I would like everything to not be in one basket.
>>
>>115803799
I was at least one of the anons in that thread. Manga is one of my biggest hobbies. I had trouble sleeping last night from the thought that this single site going down could take that away from me in any capacity.
>>
If someone has a large seedbox, the Admin for the FTP is willing to copy over files for MT's torrent.
>>
>>115803937
It's my repo and it's not even a project. It's just a brainstorm. Whether or not it ends up vaporware is up to whether anyone else with any relevant skills steps up to taking action on it.

> Yup, it is exactly what manga needs.
No. We don't need multiple sites doing the same shit inefficiently. We need one site doing it most efficiently. You think if there were multiple sites, then releases would be added as efficiently as it can be done if it were in one place?

What we need is for the MU/or any kind of manga db to be public. IF they make all the stuff public then even in case of a shutdown things can be replaced.
>>
>>115803670
>>115803799

Why should they be separate? Is there any real argument for this other than "it's easier to make?"

If we want to start things separate, that's all well-and-good, but longterm building a portable singular database that can be used and shared by a variety of sites should be the highest goal.

PS: If anyone has copies of the MU or MT databases (I don't need any actual files, just the information), submit it to the repo. Submit it to everything you can find. Make that shit as find-able as possible.
>>
>>115803929
There's a db file on Daiz's naming convention page. I think it only has the series names and creators though.

>>115803776

Release db can get all info about series and other stuff from manga db, but they should be different entities independent from each other. This will keep manga db safe from copyright nonsense and allow release db to be easily replaced
>>
>>115804243

IT'S BACK IT'S BACK

>>115804309
I have no argument against this other than a very simple one - even if it is all-in-one, so long as it's modular and well-organized, cutting out a piece of it in response to DMCA/whatever shouldn't be a problem.

And if you keep dbs and source open, replacing carefully-broken features client side is also trivial.
