It's really hard to tell what "real" modern all out air combat would look like. Analysts usually had a very different idea what air combat would be than what it later turned out to be. For example, people believed that a tight turn was important after WW1, yet climb, speed and armament turned out way more decisive during WW2. After WW2 people thought guns would become obsolete due to missiles, yet 50s and 60s era jet combat still saw a whole lot of use of gun combat.
Whether modern jet combat would be all BVR is something impossible to foretell, since especially during war, people become quite innovative.
I agree that the premise of modern jet combat isn't as interesting as WW1, WW2 and early jet combat, simply because it's not as close and personal.
