They're pretty unique in terms of character design and the domestic fandom has basically pounced on their value as expedition ships as a way to group them up with all sorts of destroyers in fanworks, especially the Akatsukis.
If there's going to be serious involvement from destroyers in the anime, especially the Akatsuikis, you're going to see or hear some mention of Tenryuu and Tatsuta at some point.

Note that there are several official manga, of varying degrees of quality. (The Shimakaze-centric one has poor story and even worse art, for instance.) The anthologies by different authors are usually solid, though.
