I fell asleep watching this on the TV in my dorm room, and the guy next door came in on me watching it. Keeping in mind that most people here in Hicksville, USA don't even know that ainme is from Japan, and the extent of their knowledge just barely reaches DBZ levels, I wonder what he thought.
>>
Eva is popular because its so easy to make up some stupid bullshit about it and it changed anime to what it is now. Madoka doesn't even compare, what effect has it had on anime? Nothing.

Anyway I enjoyed Bubblegum Crisis and I'm starting Dirty Pair, the first episode is pretty good.

A lot of anime is easily accessible people just aren't aware of it, I got a guy into Berserk then for some reason we started watching Working!! and he ended up loving it but sadly another guy turned into a huge narutard.

Classics are nice every now and again, but I can only tell so many dudes to watch project A-ko or fuckin' remind them that Macross' original season was actually good.

Spriggan is the greatest anime of our time, of all time. Plus, I saw Jin on pretty much every recommended anime list, but never saw Spriggan, and I thought it'd be more worthwhile to have the latter.

I know this logic doesn't hold up for stuff like Mazinger Z, Heidi, CCS, LOGH, and so on, but I'm a biased, flawed person.

OP again:

I would totally argue/agree that some "Classics" are still being made in this day and age.

I think the ability to identify them can be enhanced by age and experience, but that that is not necessarily a guarantee. I would say that it's kind of like looking at the PC buying choices today of a techie who had or remembers the old 8086 (and has been replacing and upgrading since) vs. what someone who graduated high school in the 00's might buy.

Sure they might come to the same kind of system, features, price. But everything else being equal, I'd expect the younger ones to be the more likely to blow something on inefficiency, sacrificing substance for style.

Fun fact: this season I am enjoying Rokujouma the most after the obvious Blue Blazes and Nozaki-kun. From the preview, though, it looked like complete shit.
>>
>>113417992
Neia _7 was great. As was Black Heaven and though it's pretty popular FLCL is from that era too. As well as Lain. Personally i miss all the violent ova's of the early and mid 90's with over the top cheesy violence. They also had dubs so bad that they transcended the awful to become great. Like Angel Cop for example. An anime i refuse to watch subbed. There are just too many quotable lines and unintentional comedy of a bunch of brit dub actors trying to sound like tough americans for a show that takes place in Japan.

They also use curses in such creative and hilarious ways as well. Cyber City Oedo and Mad Bull 34 were like this as well.

Then you have Wicked City, the first time i ever saw a Vagina dentata and it freaked me right the fuck out. Don't see too much like that these days sadly.

The problem with pre-1980 specifically is that you immediately run out of things to get through unless you're into super robots, sports, or WMT. Even most of the other classics like Rose of Versailles, Gundam, Zambot, Harlock, GE999, Conan, and Treasure Island are all like 77 and later.

Cleopatra, Belladonna of Sadness, and 1001 Arabian Nights are all Tezuka's adult-oriented Animerama from 69 to 73. They're goofy, campy, but really artistic in his style and rather well made.

Yeah, and look at the list I posted, they're all museum piece anime for kids. Sure they're important for TV anime's formative years, but try watching them all the way through today, even if they've been subbed and remastered. Also, IIRC there is also a Spanish and Italian dub though I heard those actually changed the Japanese names for local ones, Germany apparently was the only one that kept the translations accurate.

What blows my mind is how many of these I took for granted as they had been dubbed in Europe (hell, my parents watched some of these as a kids).

Heidi, Mazinger, Lupin, Candy Candy, Dog of Flanders, Harlock, etc are often stuff I got introduced as stuff that was commonly known and watched as a child (until more modern anime started to flood the market with "edgier" stuff)

This and most of Rumiko Takahashi's stuff (Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku, etc) has been dubbed in catalonia (the part of Spain that wants to just secede), our dubbing studios seemed to have a fondness for her older series (and I don't blame them).

Similarly, I am surprised how many of the series discussed here have been released in continental Europe (often we just translated whatever was popular in France) but not in English.

Yawara got a dub of the complete anime + movies, Harlock and Mazinger Z are classics and Utena has a dub that I still prefer to the Japanese version because it seems to nail the subtext better than watching it subtitled ever could.

It's a shame because ironically these dubs will never get an official DVD release here (most license-holders are not interested in releasing them and it's become an unwritten rule that people will just pirate them to keep them alive) and more recent series don't really get regional dubs anymore (only Spanish) because the economy tanked hard and we basically have only two publishing companies left when it comes to anime, one for Ghibli's stuff and another for anything else as they went bankrupt.

Dude, it's been 22 years since the original OVA came out. Even the dub is older than most people on /v/ by at least 2-3 years.

>>113429357
I loved what Diebuster did, much more than Gunbuster even. That building a mythology around the first season, and continuing to show completely different stuff, but through the mirror of Gunbuster, that made it pretty much the perfect anime for me. But, well, it's not old. It's a product of the new century.

Besides, as some people say, objectively speaking the peak of the entertainment and the art is when you are a teenager, and I was exactly in these years when Diebuster was going out. It's only normal I'd love it.

>>113429400

I liked it, and really, both are rather reflective of the times they were made in. i can't really bring myself to like one more than the other, because gunbuster did some things really well, and diebuster did other things just as well.
