The manga was alright, but you got to remember it came out in the fucking 70's. It was ahead of it's time in some ways

Berserk doesn't.
Even though it's dated in some ways, the manga's great. I'm not super knowledgeable about the history of manga, but I've always felt that it represents something of a turning point. As Devilman graduates from its rough and silly beginnings, so too does the entire medium.
Or something like that.
The OVA was pretty fun although the first one was genuinely good the others were kind of corny.

Devilman is a fun classic. Just got into it recently and actually like it a lot more than Berserk.
The last volume felt a bit rushed, but I rather that than the drawn-out shit we have today.

Satan fell in love with Akira under her amnesiac disguise as Ryo Asuka, who fell for wimpy Akira in those two years they spent together (unlike Miki who just liked him when he was demonic and hotter). Because of this, Amon, the demon supposed to wear him as a suit dies and he takes his power (in the realities Satan/Ryo doesn't exist, Akira DIES and is Amon who is wearing his skin). Love makes one does stupid things.
Of course, Ryo pretends he wants to manipulate and use Akira because can't spit out he's in love with him with misleads Akira into rage and hurt of betrayal which led to the final battle "of love and hate" between them. One too proud to seek him, another too angry to speak.
They made up in the sequel.

If you like darker and edgier AU, there's Amon. If you like Miki, there's a manga Devilman G that is the Miki show (she's pretty sidelined in general in the main continuity). There are other spin offs, but I only recommend you Nagai's stuff.

The canon stories are the ones written by Go Nagai. Devilman in the Dark is a volume that compiles chapter 5 of the first Neo Devilman volume and chapter 3 the second Neo Devilman volume.

Can't really comment on the sequels and adaptations because I haven't seen/read them, I learned my lesson with Diebuster and Rebuild. If you really love something and that something gets a sequel/remake much later on, don't bother. They're always terrible and lessen your enjoyment of the original work.

Well look, I'm of the same mind about derivative works, but there are exceptions where they have their merits as stand alone products, example : Diebuster is not a piece of history like Gunbuster but is still a great series, and for the hard work of the staff, not because it have a "gunbuster2" label on the box. Same about Nagai stuff, with the difference that everyting is pretty equal, and ultimately nothing goes back changing the sense of previous iterations.

I consider the original Devilman, by itself, an absolute masterpiece of a manga. As expected, Nagai does the same. It's his self-admitted masterpiece. And he's not talking about Devilman Lady or Violence Jack or Maoh Dante. He's talking about the 1972 Devilman serialization that made him a legend in the manga world.
The rest of the Devilman saga is absolutely great, don't get me wrong. But the story of the original Devilman manga, just from start to finish is a masterpiece. I've read all of the other works translated, but I always consider Devilman (excluding Shin Devilman) to be its own "true" canon.
