I want to say evangelion, but Katekyo Hitman Reborn is usually the thing to comes to mind. That shit is just an example on how not to advance a plot, and to use your characters, shit was dull, and couldn't decide most of the time, if it was serious, comedy, action, drama, or romance. I would just clasify it as a bad Action Comedy, the kind that just tries but doesn't make you laugh.

A lot of anime these days are adapted from LNs, which themselves are adapted from WNs.
There are tons of WNs with "scumbag" protagonists (especially any of the ones involving slaves, harems, reincarnation, revenge, etc), but most of them are either full on edgelords or just straight up assholes. Kazuma's kind of novel in that he is actually likable.

Why is Black Lagoon the best anime in its genre and why does't Rei Hiroe just create more. I'm sure that if he created more of it, it would sell great in today's market where there's nothing that can even reach to the level of awesomeness that Black Lagoon had. Yet in FSN, Kotomine dueled with True Assassin and was able to hold his ground. Shirou also had a manly fight against Gil who is supposed to have even better stats than Assassin.
