Better animation and art. Story wise they're doing pretty damn good.
The story is not that bad. But the animation and the art is horrible. Sure DBZ also had a bunch of quality moments, but the fights at least had 90% of good animation. DBS doesnt even try to look decent.

Why do so many anime get fucked over during production? Nadia was a great show that's brought down by the single worst filler arc of all time that goes on for one third of its entire duration, and the animation quality, character development and story shits the bed the moment the set foot on that goddamn island. Now I see why working on this show drove Anno insane.

In that specific case greed. It was doing well so NHK wanted to milk it for what is worth. In Karekano case the author got pissed and they had budget issues so the team was forced to shut out the abrupt end.
Looking back It's not surprising Gainax died the way it did. They never really sided with the staff in any of these situations.
Still worth noting tha now that he is his own boss Anno makes some really shit calls himself.
