America, Germany, Britain, even China or Korea could be tryng to develop their own anime and profit from that by competing with Japan.

It was the late 90s Evangelion and Utena had just aired and there was a sentiment in the air that Anime can find deeper truths in more elaborate ways than traditional mediums. It was the era of Grunge rock. The audiences wanted smart, attentive deconstructions and they weren't afraid of more somber meaning.
Plus there was all this buzz about the 'information superhighway' that was connected by dial up modems and how it might change things in the world.
Lain was ahead of it's time and it was also exactly on time.

I am genuinely curious. What is it about little sister characters that people like? Outside of stereotypes, "Little sister" literally says nothing about a character's personality, looks, or the way that they grow over the course of the series. The only thing the term "little sister" tells me is the character is probably 1. Young and 2. not the main character (since they always seem to be related to some dumbass main-character big brother rather than the main character themselves).
So why do so many people suddenly either love or hate a character just because the term "little sister" is attached to them?
The better question is why do imoutos get all the love and never Onee-chans?
it usually speaks to a very specific kind of cuteness. It's closer and more intimate and comfortable. Two characters being close without needing to navigate social norms, etc.
As a siscon I would like to relay my thoughts on the matter of why I have taken such a liking towards this fetish.
Setting is an important thing, both the brother and sister need to live in the same house, that closeness in proximity is an important part for fully realizing the joy of incest. Two fully blood-related beings, such a relationship turning sexual has been reviled and forbidden by the tacit rules of society, although throughout your life you (normally) wouldn't receive warnings against such things, it seems to be innately understood for all people that engaging in such an act is vile. This societal distaste for incest is one of the reasons why the fetish can be what it is, two people so close yet so far. Close by nature but far apart by he rules of civilization, the tender feelings that develop as both of them develop as they each effect and leave imprints on the other's life is heartwarming and almost idealistic. Sadly I do not have a sister in real life (I have a brother though) but in my eyes to have a sister is to have a girl whose as close to your heart as can be. Since you can remember she's been there and since she can remember you've been there as well, although differing in personal styles and life choices you two have always been with each other in some capacity, yet despite this there must be a divide between you due to what the zeitgeist have dictated to be moral and right. To love your imouto and in turn be loved by her takes your relationship beyond that of conventional siblings bonded by blooded, but elevates to a romantic pair inseparable because of blood. Loving your sister is the ultimate "fuck you" towards society, as you express a deep love that can never be broken.
