No. Read the manga from chapter 1. Don't bother with the movies unless you're curious after you've read the manga.

For a lot of kids outside the west it was the first fiction with a long running story combining action and power levels. Dunno why it became so popular in Japan at the first place though, it's not like this was even the best Jump manga at the time.

dramatic misunderstandings
comedic misunderstandings are annoying but brief. Dramatic ones are not only stupid as fuck but last for entire chapters. Apparently I'm suppose to be invested in a relationship where the love interest has little to no trust in the MC.
I personally enjoyed show enough to go out and start buying the manga. I like the whole aspect of the main heroine being in charge while the main hero is the damsel in distress, that aspect made the show funny for me. You usually don't see it in anime which is why this show stands out to me.
The manga has been pretty sucky since the anime ended, tho.

For me it was Haruhi, had this thing backlogged for years until I finally decided to give it a go. It was good but I was honestly left wondering what all the fuzz was about.
