Leaving the armor was pretty interesting but it kinda clashes with the minimalist feel to me. I would like to see the original image as well.
There seems to be some strange artifact near the top of the page and the her outline seems pretty rough, like where I circled on the hair it seems like a white background is peeking out or something. On her leg that line is jagged. It kinda looks like there are lines sticking out from the original image
>>
Is anyone able to perform your wizardry and simplify this up for me please (I don't mind background colours and would prefer phone background proportions sorry if I am unclear) thanks :D
>>

heres the original. and yea, i noticed some jagginess, but im not really sure how to fix it. could probably do it in photoshop, but i use gimp
>>

I'd like to have this in a desktop wallpaper, though. Not the guy who requested, but if it's possible...
>>
>>1690894
As far as I know gimp is not a very optimal program to make vectors. Since you are using gimp I'm assuming you don't have the adobe programs. A free program that is used for vectors is Inkscape. If you want to make better vectors you should look into that program or investing in illustrator

>>1691001
I dunno if its just me and I'm inexperienced at this however I find that the background messes with my eyes. That could just be that my eyesight is a pile of shit :P
>>
>>1691001
The background is too busy and strong, it also makes it impossible to give any critique because it distracts from the actual border of the character.
>>
Three things.

1. If you want critiques, post the image at a higher resolution (300 PPI/DPI should be fine).

2. Post it as a transparent. It makes it easier to critique, and 9 times out of 10, the person would rather use their own background design or color than the one you chose anyway.

3. Post a link to the original for better critiques. You may be able to reverse image search a vector in the vector thread since it looks the same, but these minimal images are beyond that.

Yeah, I thought her sleeves looked kinda weird too--I think because the lower portion of her shirt is a different colour than the top and her sleeves--but other than adding a shadow I couldn't think of a way to make it look any better and I felt like that would take away from the minimalism of the image.

Here's the vector alone at high-res, and the source image is at danbooru /posts/1223108 if anybody cares.

Couple errors. Some of the hair by the right side of her neck is peeking through. The hair should be over her breast instead of under it, like in the original. The left strap for her shirt isn't connected to the skin. The bottom leg lines need to go under the artboard, or you just need to export with artboard on.

Can someone do it for me?

An artboard is basically the boundaries of an image that you set for the program to recognize. What you want to do at the beginning of every image that you decide to vector is to select the original image, and fit the artboard to it, and then lock that image. Then you make another layer above where you can freely draw inside and outside of the artboard and it will only export what is included within the artboard, provided you tell it to.

Here is how you fit it in both Illustrator and Inkscape. To export with Artboards in Illustrator, you select the checkbox "Use Artboards" in the export window. In Inkscape, you select "Page" in the export window.
>>
>>1691082
You use the pen tool and fill the colors. It is a waste to do it in Photoshop though, since it is a raster program. It is much more beneficial to do it in Illustrator, Inkscape, or any other vector based program, so that it could be resized to any resolution without a loss in quality.
>>
>>1691085
That's incorrect, the pen tool creates vector paths in Photoshop. It only rasterizes it if you convert your path to a selection instead of a shape.
>>
>>1691100
You can create vector paths in Photoshop, but the fill within will become rasterized. It is basically having vector containers filled with a raster, which is not a true vector. It then becomes what is called a "vexel", where it will look almost identical to a vector, but suffer pixelation when resized. Considering that is what will ultimately happen to these images, it would be a waste to do it in Photoshop.

The best you could do would be to make the vector shapes in Photoshop, and then convert it over to a proper vector program. By that point you are already wasting time when you can just create it right in the first place.
>>
>>1691106
After using Photoshop for 10 years is there any chance of me being able to effectively use Illustrator, or are they too different?
>>
>>1691109
I'm learning Inkscape after eight years of GIMP; at least PhotoShop and Illustrator are both made by Adobe.
>>
>>1691109
I don't normally use Photoshop, but I know the pen tool is very similar to the one in Illustrator. I just tested it briefly. I was able to do almost everything I am used to doing in Illustrator with the same tool.

The layering and how you make fills may be different, but that is very easy to learn. The important part is that the pen tool functions the same way.

wanted to ask on but saw his on the old thread
>>1687929

Is there a tutorial to do this or something?
>>
>>1691128
That type of image is closer to a full vector that includes lineart. The tutorial above in this thread will not help you learn how to make fills for lineart, as minimals remove all the lineart. The vector thread has tutorials that would help with that >>1689892

Please read/watch the tutorials carefully so you don't make a vector as shit as that one you linked to.

When I use the original .png files from these threads as wallpapers they turn pixelated around edges and things, I've had to convert them to .jpg is there any way to fix this?
what it looks like - http://a.pomf.se/zkkpst.png
(I'm using windows 7 64bit btw)
>>
>>1691573
Windows converts your wallpapers to .jpg automatically. I haven't tried, but here's a link to a possible workaround: http://superuser.com/questions/507097/stop-windows-8-from-converting-wallpapers-to-low-quality-jpgs
>>
>>1691573
Happens to me too. Whenever I add a new wallpaper to my rotation now I check if it gets auto compressed, and if it does I run it though online convert. Just using anything that can convert an image to jpg without any compression is the best way around it. I searched quite a bit for a better way, and there doesn't seem to be one.
>>
>>1691573
Yeah, as previously stated Windows stores your wallpapers as a jpg and applies awful compression when you try to use a png; your best bet is downloading a program that lets you tweak your jpg settings on export.

Irfanview and GIMP are both freeware programs with this capability, with Irfanview being more a replacement for Windows Picture Viewer that just happens to be able to save images in other formats and GIMP being a PhotoShop replacement.

>>

With that level of detail you really might as well do her face, she looks weird.

You also have a blue line across the bottom of your image, and there's a weird line across the strand of hair on her right (left side of image) level with her hand.

I would love to see it transparent at 300 DPI after it's fixed though.

>>
>>1692128
Are you using Illustrator or Inkscape? I'm only familiar with the latter.

What you would do there to get a transparent 300 DPI image is hide the background-blue layer, Ctrl+Shift+E to Export the image, choose Page, then under "bitmap size" you have two boxes to enter the pixel size you want; just enter 300 in the box to the right marked "at X DPI" and it should give you an approximately 4000px tall png file with a transparent background.

Having never used Illustrator I can't swear to it, but I imagine the process would be similar there.
>>
>>1692129

>>
>>1692129
Oh while I'm in the presence of a more knowledgable person, how do you get object lines to snap to each other? It's tedious to go in zoom and readjust... And can that be done with layers? (I. E. Getting shade blocks right on top of the underlying object) if this can be done in inkscape that would save so much time

It's much easier to see small errors at that resolution, so I've circled a few color-leaks and kinked lines, and questioned a few lines that look funny. Again, the bottom of your image isn't quite to the bottom of your artboard; check >>1691083 for an explanation on that.

I'm not sure why your image didn't export transparent; you know that doesn't mean "white background" but means "no background", right? Like >>1692000 and >>1691994

As for "fixing colours" the only thing that really stands out to me as being a bit off is her skintone; try changing her base skin color from e2a289 to something like f0ddcc which is closer to the color she is in the show. If we wanna get really picky her hair colour also isn't 232323 but more 3c3c3c, but that's really splitting hairs.
>>
>>1692158
Ah OK, well I did white because the actual background is really botched and looks disgusting, and I omitted the cane altogether. Is there really a big difference between the two in terms of someone else doing something with it? I'll get the transparent up later along with your suggested fixes but I dunno if I can get the bottom limit done properly, you have color codes, I'm familiar with it but haven't investigated it in inkscape if you know where that is. Your very helpful thank you!
>>
>>1692160
If you hit Ctrl+Shift+F it'll bring up the Fill/Stroke options window, and when you select an object (series of connected nodes which make a shape) you can tweak the colours from that window; it's as simple as typing them in the appropriate box.

As far as white vs transparent, yeah that matters a lot; if it's white and someone else wants to put it on another background they have to go along and erase the entire background all along the outside edge of the image which makes it look like garbage, whereas if you just post it without a background at all people can just paste it onto whatever background they want easy peasy.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the actual background" being botched; it should be as simple as turning the layer off (Ctrl+Shift+L to get the layers window, click the eye next to a layer to temporarily hide it) and just export the image with all the background layers hidden and you'll have a proper transparent png

No shit. That is why I suggested Mediafire/Dropbox.

Anyway, it is a simple fix. File > Document Color Mode > RBG

Changing that fixes the weird glitch. You pretty much always want to be in RGB mode anyway, since these will become wallpapers, unless you plan to print any of these.

I noticed you were creating multiple shapes in order to deal with the hair cutouts. I remember having to do something similar back when I first started vectoring. There is much easier way though. Open the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder) and place it somewhere. You will want this at all times, specifically for Minus Front. Now you should be able to draw the hair as all one object, and then draw shapes over cutouts and use Minus Front to delete it.

Other than that, you had a lot of nodes with only one handle, as opposed to two on each side. This created a lot of weird hair that could be much sharper. In almost all cases, you want every node to have two handles. It will make your life easier.

Anyway, I did the whole image to image to illustrate what I meant. Here is the .Ai file so you can see how I did the nodes.

A few of the bigger problems I see:

It doesn't look like you're using clipping masks, so your colors aren't lining up. For example, on her sleeve, the stripes aren't flush with the blue. Try looking clipping masks up on google or something.

Either you're not using fills, or you're doing something else weird, because the points on areas like her hair should all be sharp.

Your lines are just messy in general. Lots of sharp or lumpy edges. Use less nodes for starters, and try moving the handles to adjust to the lines instead. Make sure you don't leave sharp nodes on parts that should be smooth, like the left of her hat.

You fixed a lot of things, but you also darkened her hair instead of lightening it, and left her skin tone too dark.

Also like >>1692272 said, you should be using fills instead of strokes or whatever weird thing is going on so her hair tapers to sharper points instead of ending in squares.

Here's a quick swatch of her hair I threw together with fills (note the sharp points) and the correct colour.
>>
>>1691986
when will we get the final version?
>>
>>1692366
I didn't darken it the white background makes it look that way I'm not sure how to do fills, what that is or how to do efficiently, I really should look it up but I did this in the fly...
>>
>>1692481
Ctrl+Shift+F to open the fills/stroke window, click the X on the strokes tab and the "solid colour" on the fills tab, that will make your objects a solid mass of colour with no outline, and allow tapered points. You should pretty much never use strokes in vectors because they look like garbage.

If you didn't darken the hair then I don't know what's up, because it is absolutely darker by about half. Was it set to 50% opacity before and 100% now?

You really just need to follow the line for the hair and pinpoint where the nodes need to be placed to align both sides of the hair.

Other than that, you need to smooth out the hair a good deal, and add more curvature to them. Too many nodes and not enough handles. Make sure every node has two handles and you will avoid most of the problems. Same applies to the shirt and hands.

Anyway, I wanted my own interpretation with the white skin and shadows, so here is mine.
