>discuss writerly struggles with fellow writefriends

Join us in IRC at [ #vpwritethread on irc.rizon.net ] to discuss your fics, hang out and chat, and be frightened by the regulars!

Previous Thread: >>25961463

Check out the catalog for a directory of fics from fellow writefags,
>https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PtN4D_9CSw8JJ9uO6v0oQqdtKEkS8aFAvfxqI96XfSE/edit?usp=sharing

>Can I post NSFW fics?
Absolutely! There are no rules against NSFW text links.

>How should I post my fics?
Please, for the convenience of everyone involved, link to a host like Fanfiction.net, Pastebin or Google Docs rather than dumping your fics in text posts. This not only keeps the thread tidy (and keeps you from getting an infraction for spam), but it also provides a more permanent place to store your work.

>Can I add a fic I wrote to the catalog?
Sure! Check the catalog for the submission link. In there, you can find a link to a Google Form - fill out all the necessary information and it will be submitted for review automatically. Technology is incredible!

We're also looking to collect ideas for fanfics as a resource for stumped writers. Feel free to throw an idea out there; someone may choose to use it themselves!

I haven't read too terribly many fics yet, though I plan to do so once finals are over, but I'm usually drawn to SFW fics that seem to have interesting stories based on their summaries. Cute moments are often pleasant surprises, too. I would have to say that a few dissuading factors would be poorly handled NSFW elements and poorly handled dark themes; in the case of the latter, basically straying into edgy territory.

TOTT: I don't read much fanfiction at all anymore. I'll skim through snippets and sometimes read an entire work with the intent to critique, but otherwise I direct most of my fanfiction-related attention to improving my own work.

If I had to isolate the reasons that used to get me to close a tab instantly though: grammar, sentence structure, word choice for any and all nsfw elements were the big three. Kind of a pity to close a tab because the word "cock" showed up outside of a dialogue and roosters but oh well, I'm weird.

Pokemon name chanting is pure filler because it does not communicate anything. In the animation, it's a vessel for inflection and combines with gesture; in writing, it's packing peanuts.

So, people, in your setting, _why_ are they called Pokémon? Or are they called / do they call themselves something else?

See, "Pokémon" is abrvspk for "Pocket Monsters", which, if the etymology of the term is similar in-universe, more or less implies carrying them in pockets, miniaturizing them, or capturing them, in any combination of the above, is about as old as humans have had modern language. However at least M12 suggests the term is not the only denomination that has existed for Pokémon.

So... why? How?

(And then there's the whole Farla tangent of 'Pokémon' itself being capitalised as it is a brand name, etc etc. Unless translator microbes, etc etc.)

For a more tasty food for thought: would Pokémon as a collective care what humans call them? How does this work in a PMD-esque world?
>>
>>26053087
this probably dives way too deep into langauge and linguistics than what I would normally care for. They could easily start as just monsters, with the invention of the pokeball making them portable shifting it into pocket monsters, accumulating to modernization of the word, simplifying it to Pokemon.
>>

>>
Oh cool a new thread.
>>26053087
The better question to ask is why give the creatures the name of monster in the first place, considering their deep relationship with humans and the (apparent) lack of any other animal lurking in Pokemon's setting.
Under normal circumstances a monster title is given to a creature that exists outside of the 'norm' of nature, something out of the ordinary, maybe even as a warning. However, despite all the helpfulness a Pokemon can grant as well as them being the 'normal' animal in society, they're still technically labeled as monsters.
>>
>>26053999
>>26053131
>Monster
>They could easily start as just monsters,
>a monster title is given to a creature that exists outside of the 'norm' of nature
Hmmm that is a good thing that I had never thought of. I guess in Japanese culture the term 'monster' (or rather, their Japanese for it) has nowhere near the negative connotations it has in Western culture, so that gives a better understanding of the OOU reasoning.

Still does nothing for the IU reasoning except for providing a potential indication that humans saw, at some point in the past, Pokémon as creatures unnatural to the world. Do we have any canon evidence to this end?

>>26053326
They are named as such because anything else is less-specific, too long-winded or both.
>less-specific
Hmmmm okay, makes sense and it's something interesting to work with but... With the implication of the "enough-specific" being what exactly, that a "Pokémon" is "a creature that can be captured in a Pokéball"? We don't know if they work on anime animals, plants or humans, though in the least we know they don't work with "donuts". Seems to fit quite well with how languages evolve (heh).

The origins of the term "Pokemon" as it relates to mainstream usage has a long and complicated history, and indeed while no longer considered useful in modern taxonomy the division of animals into "monsters" and "non-monsters" continues unabated among the public and media. The Trainer's Almanac loosely defines Pokemon as any form of animal which demonstrates the following traits:

-Can be captured and miniaturized on a molecular level through the use of Pokeballs
-Are capable of rapid regeneration through the use of various or man-made healing agents (Pokemon Centers, Oran Berries, Potions, etc)
-Can communicate directly (to varying degrees) with other Pokemon, regardless of species, through a form of universal translation that all Pokemon appear to be born with

While significant anthropological evidence regarding the usage of the term has been collected dating as far back as ancient Mesopotamia, the perspectives of Pokemon themselves is significantly less understood. Not only does human influence heavily bias the responses of trained and privately bred Pokemon, the question of whether Pokemon are even capable of conceptualizing the grouping of species into categories and subcategories is still under debate. What is known is that wild Pokemon in regions entirely cut off from civilization tend to treat humans indiscriminately from other potential predators and intruders on their territory. Attempts at communicating with wild Pokemon in these areas- a particularly difficult task, even when using trained Pokemon as an intermediary- indicate that they tend to view humans as an unusually behaved but otherwise nondescript bipedal creature not unlike a Hitmonchan or Throh.

Professor Elm of the Johto region perhaps summarized this issue best when he theorized that the vast majority of Pokemon view us humans as simply "another species" and do not distinguish us in any particular unique category- until we give them a reason to.

This is something I've wrestled with plenty myself. It really just doesn't fit at all with what these things should actually be referred to collectively. But what alternative is there..? It' so ingrained in everyone's minds that using any other term would just unimmerse the reader and seem forced or disngenuine (I think that's a word) if handled poorly. I'm sure if someone was skilled enough they could make it work, but it seems to be more work to pull off than it would be worth to change this.
>>
>>26058220
You know while I don't fully agree with it given a slight reliance on Pokémon not being that much capable of abstraction, I think it is good enough a Watsonian perspective into it that, with some tweaks here and there, I'd like to adapt it for it to be quotable in my 'verse.

With curation and permission, of course.
>>
If you're writing a fantasy story that's based on a world with pokemon, it would be completely unreasonable to expect the English language to have been invented and used there, yet you write the dialogue in English. That's the author translating from some gibberish fantasy language for the readers benefit. The word "pokemon" is not an exception.

There's always the option of using a real artificial language as a 'front' for the presence of a constructed in-universe language. I think there was a couple of movies that did that with Esperanto or some of its variants? One of them was a vampire movie, from before vampires sparkled, even.

Speaking from experience, that's a good way to forget everything. It's not a crime to have a few ongoing stories/universes etc.
>>
>>26071585
I'm hoping Jo ends up more interesting as Au Coup Par Coup evolves, otherwise it's probably Valkut and his thieving, dry, cynical, grudgingly romantic at heart ways.

I also want to make a Xatu named d'Artagnan interesting. Jury's out on what he'll do still.
>>
>>26075835
In the universe that he exists, he controlled drug distribution for that world's Mafia/Mafioso/gang/cartel. At one point, there's a problem with their cocaine supply and they take a trip down to pseudo-Columbia to take a look at what's going on down there and causing the supply to dry up. When he gets there, they stumble onto the fringes of fifty-year-old drug drama. They eventually find out that somebody's been burning the coca plants before they can be processed and it looks like one of the associates they knew. When they go over there to strong arm them into stopping it, they get thrown halfway across the room. Near death, the associate whispers something into the 'ear' of the lizard before bursting into flames and running out the door. Not wanting collateral damage, they give chase but don't get far before collapsing from a powerful migraine. When they wake up, they are tied to a chair by the associates of the one who burnt the coca fields. He tries to explain this, but they are not hearing it. He gets more and more mad until he rips through his bindings and beats the stuffing out of them. He doesn't realize something's wrong until he's drinking their blood and casting fireballs from his hands. Initially, he believes it to be hallucinations, but the demon in his eye, Balthazar, tells him to take a photo of it. Not knowing what went wrong, he scrubs himself of all the evidence and gets home as fast as possible. Soon, the cocaine supply starts back up again, but it seems that Balthazar isn't the only demon involved with the drug trade.
And then plot happens, but you just asked for an explanation of the character, not the entire universe.
>>
>>26076213
Sounds pretty cool. Any particular reason he's a lizard, or is it just author appeal?

Lizard-people have a higher affinity for supernatural stuff, as demons/Angels/etc exist. They oft become mediums. Demonic possession is rare.

It's somethinng I've done for as log as I can remember. Ever one of my favorite shows would have me creating "fanfic" in my head. Sometimes that fanfic would stray so far from the source, that it would essentially be OC.

I always assumed because the Pokemon can and canonically have been used as weapons. So instead of who has the biggest guns controls the world, its whoever has the strongest Pokemon. And you don't get much stronger than the champ and elite 4. Some of them could probably level entire cities with their teams.

Maybe that's why there is a 6 Pokemon per team rule. To make sure some upstart doesn't take every single one of his Pokemon try and fight against the league.

Angst. Sorry, rather, undying angst. If your character is an angst-fueled wreck than fine, but fuck man. Why don't you take yourself down off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge and get over it?

I know perma-angst indicates a fatal flaw of character but I still hate it because it comes off as lazy. It's pure hopelessness and it ensures a narrative will see no evolution, only a stable stream of negativity and futility. Granted, this is only particularly bothersome when it's a main character. Side characters I can just ignore.

I have no real qualms with character appearances outside of heterochromia.

>character trait
OCs who are always toted as do-gooders who help anybody in need. If it's a canon character, then okay, it's most likely been employed properly or fleshed out as a flaw in itself (astro boy, magic knight rayearth, etc). But when I see it for OCs, the author almost always uses it as a universal merit, a cheap shot at forcing their character's "light" alignment down the reader's throat. It's just not realistic. Real people weigh the cost-benefit ratio in every situation. Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I have encountered very few OCs for which this trait was employed effectively.

>physical trait

>>
>>26091315
Well in NSFW writing it's pretty easy. Men tend to go into every single detail about what's happening, how big everything is, and how everyone's feeling. Women tend to focus more on the emotional side of the interaction, and are more likely to put more dialogue in the middle of such scenes.
This is true in all aspects, really, but is harder to notice. Men tend to like to convey information clearly, whereas women prefer to convey emotion.
Of course, this is a generalization, and a really good writer and write in a voice that doesn't match their gender if they choose.

Because it is the most beautiful declaration of love you can make, saying "i love you so much that after i fuck your brains out, i will make sure nobody ever does again"
also I might be a little bit of a masochist, and really like writing violence and death and beautifully thought out plans to eviscerate people how they deserve.
Yandere Zinnia may include, but not limited to:
>Lisia found dead with her eyes gouged out, strangled with her own intestines and "Whore" written on her forehead in blood
>May, tortured and stabbed dozens of times right in front of brendan
>brendan, tied down to a gurney and stabbed through each joint on his hands and feet with a large, rusty nail
>zinnia riddled with bullets when the police find her and the soon-to-be dead brendan
>Flannery being waterboarded with kerosene and then set on fire, doused and allowed to recover before repeating.
and more if i think of it
>>
>>26110155
Violence =! yandere
It just means extremes of love, delusions of grandeur, and possessiveness. IMO, yandere without the slow burn insanity is not worth it. It's no fun if she just starts out killing people. Not even Yūno Gasai did that.
>>
>>26110471
You don't need to think of more. The CIA torture manual was put into the public domain awhile ago. Use that.
>>
>>26110645

too easy, if anything, kidnap the girl, torture her until she is begging for death, and then tell her she can have the anatoxin if she can make it to the other side of a room, where the floor is covered in broken glass and caltrops.
If she is able to still stand, zinnia would break one of her kneecaps as she started walking, causing her to collapse and have to drag herself across, and when she finally makes it to the end, say "just kidding!" and laugh as the girl breaks down screaming.
then, MAYBE give her the poison, if she feels like it.

sadomasochist. You either imagine inflicting the pain in great detail or expereince/indulge in the pain in great detail.
>>
>>26110925
That's entry-level sadism for someone like her. Why not go full madness?
>>
>>26111319
I can do 4chan on my phone, and its a bit of both for the causing/feeling pain. Its one of the things i hide most from my family/real friends.
God forbid my grandmother found out the shit i write, she'd have another heart attack
>>
>>26111319
I mean, I can write violent shit from both perspectives but take no real pleasure in either unless it is deserved. That's schadenfreude at work I guess.

>>26111811
Isn't most anything that gets written here (with some exceptions) shit that probably shouldn't be seen by family?
>>
>>26112165
oh, i wouldn't want anyone in my family to read what i write, ever.
it's just that if i had to choose, i'd rather they find the meaningless story about some chick going camping than the story about murder and rape and death

My literary theories are more dangerous than 3k word lewdfics I just shit out in an hour. I'd probably get more shit for that because I'm friends with people who I know would not care about what I do for money. My family, when I do see them, is the same way.

>what makes or breaks a fic for you when searching for something to read?

Hard to say, since there's a lot of things that can easily send fics off the rails and into 'meh, dropped'. The reflexive things that would make a fic even catch my interest to begin with is having a competent writing style and doing something distinctive from the herd.

On that note, I also am back with another update. Which will close out the current block of chapters in favor of a new one in-story.

>remember being kid on Pokemon website

>eventually make my own PMD site full of tales
It's 10 years since then, looking back on the site. Does anyone else have as cringey a beginning, or did people mostly just start after seeing the threads for so long on /vp/? Want to move on and write some cute stories but I feel like I might not have what it takes/would hate to make someone cringe.
>>
>>26118195
Hell yeah, my roots (way the fuck back too) are cringey as fuck, I had a bunch of stupid ideas that were edgy as fuck despite my best efforts even then to not have them be. Hell, I think my work from just 3 or 4 years ago is just as cringey, just not edgy.

I'm glad I'm past that shit, but looking back, it was some 13 years ago. God damn, where did the time go?

Anyway, as far as the latter part of your post: just start. You don't get better without practice.

Well there's just things I gotta write that no one else will write, you know? That's how I started writing fics at all was how obviously exploitable topics were being ignored. Besides, /feg/ is 80% smut anyways. They need a little more fluff in their lives.

The only doubt I still have is what I'm going to fucking write about once I loop back. Like, I got this relationship established and a bunch of characters but what am I going to do with them? I've been thinking hard on some nice Suicune stuff that take place in the main world, but the potential for that could be weighed from a major project all the way down to a one-shot. At least it wouldn't be what I had planned for the future of the Larvesta. Really, nothing was even written down and it was still far too dark in comparison to anything else I've ever done.

>>26118195
I don't want to post my OC from years ago again, please don't make me do it. I expunged that fanfiction from the universe for a reason.

By now you're probably miles from being cringe-worthy considering you're so self-conscious about it. All you need to do now is try and improve, basically.
>>
>>26118217
>it was still far too dark in comparison to anything else I've ever done
Well, you can't just SAY that and leave it at that. What about all that talk about 'mastering the art of suffering' a few threads back?
>>
>>26118224
The original plot would be so needlessly dark that I'd venture that, even well-written and coherent, that shit would probably be sharper than chef Ramsay's kitchen knives. Like, imagine a downward slope. That's everyone's hopes and dreams as I would progress the fic. Larvesta is supposed to be a starry-eyed kid who wants to see the world from above, and while it would be important to convey how unforgiving that dream might be, my plan was to basically shit all over everything she ever knew and loved possibly until an untimely death. Ears I'd like to think was bitter tinged with sweet, not literally drinking bleach.
>>
>>26118238
And to add: I, too, wish for snek and doggo fun times before I decide to ruin people's days on a regular basis.
>>
>What makes or breaks a fic for you when searching for something to read?

Hard to day. It usually has to be a combination of things. But the highest scorers for things that break a fic for me are a) keeping Pokémon too out of focus b) having too many bad / evil things happen in the first few chapters c) too strict adherence to one canon alone (manga, games, etc). All that in no particular order.

So, yet another question to lively up the thread:

Who here besides me happens to write Pokémon nonfiction / in-universe fictional documentation (in addition to fiction)? Has anyone ever chanced to write a school essay, or perhaps an article for a magazine, on Pokémon?

And what are your thoughts on Pokémon nonfiction anyway?
>>
>>26123558
Can't say I have. I wrote a research paper on TF2 and the concept of built environments in college that was worth publishing though.

I regret not publishing it.
>>
>>26123558
I took psychology in college all the way up to the 450 level and I did wind up writing a paper on how Pokémon psychology could work and non-bullshit ways the things the creators said about people in that universe could work.

Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on Pokemon that let themselves be caught willing by trainers?
>>
>>26126359
As long as there's a reason behind it. A life spent with a trainer can be spun pretty easily to seem more attractive than a life spent out in the wilds; they get food, shelter, and a never-ending supply of new opponents to face so that they may better themselves and grow stronger. Alternatively, they may feel they owe the trainer a debt, such as for saving their life. As long as there's some sort of reasoning behind the decision, there's nothing wrong with it.

Sick as fuck, that's what I think.

Sure, earning the respect of a pokemon enough to be tamed is great and all, but I always felt that there was more potential in a pokemon that allowed itself to be under the authority of a human. That kind of shit doesn't just happen, an individual mon would need some kind of reason or list of reasons as to why being subjected to a master would be superior to roaming wild. I'm especially keen on that kind of shit with legendaries, though it's a lot harder to sell considering they mostly have no reason to lot themselves beneath any old human. Lust and cultural curiosity are the most acceptable terms in my book.
>>
>>26126359
Considering that's pretty much the default for my setting, I don't think too ill of it. That's the purpose why Pokémon appear before people on the tall grass - there's a test and if the test is passed the Pokémon comes willingly --and sometimes feels entitled to be pushy about doing it.

But that relies on, as >>26126378 puts it, "as long there's a reason behind it". Merely getting out of the wilds doesn't cut it. Merely "oooh I'm going to battle, get knocked out and wake up unharmed next to a hot Chansey" doesn't either.
>>
>>26126359
As for my fic, the reason is that most pokémon living in the wild are dying for no reason whatsoever, not to mention the food supply has dried out. Granted, that's some weird reason involving radiation and other bullshit only a ficwriter could think of. While that specific case didn't happen yet (the closest to it was "I didn't want to be caught but heck, why wouldn't I want this life?"), but soon enough pokémon will start begging for trainers to take them.

it's not all fluffy with trainers either. Nuzlocke rules do apply.
>>
>>26126359
I don't see anything questionable in gaining allies through negotiation.
One needs to be careful to have it make sense and not just be some cheap cartoonish excuse to avoid conflict. That goes double if Pokémon are portrayed as sapient. The scenario can easily reveal holes in the worldbuilding.

a long time ago I wanted to do a reverse nuzlocke story. In previous runs, the MC's pokemon always die, but never the NPCs. I wanted to see what happens if the MC's pokemon never die (instead released on spot), but everyone else around them do...not to mention that they're oblivious about it, probably until its too late.
