How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:

Tool Retriever accomplishes the same goal. It also lets you recycle your Links/Bands/Stones to use on a second Houndoom or to pull them off a Shaymin.
Obviously being able to hit your opponent's tools makes Scrapper better, but Retrieval is fine enough.

Start at Base set. Base, Jungle, Fossil, and Rocket are all the cheapest sets.
Personally, I use yardsales (Yardsale season is coming up too), thrift stores, antique shops (Pic related was $20) and for new sets, I go to prereleases to save money on packs, and buy at my local card shops since they tend to be cheaper and often do buy4get1 deals.
I also scam the FUCK out of my local target and make them sell me $40-$50 boxes of cards for $19.99 because they have the wrong sticker in the card section and haven't fixed it in over 2 months.

Rotation happens in September. Presumably we're losing sets XY, Flashfire, Furious Fists and Phantoms Forces in Standard.
The Standard ban list is literally picture related. Card bans in general are rare, Lysandre's Trump Card was the first one in years. Expanded has also banned Shiftry from Next Destinies, because it can theoretically end the game without the other player even getting a turn thanks to Forest of Giant Plants.

I'm into collecting old cards as well.
So far, I mostly got them from yardsales (and like some anon told you, the yardsale season is about to start/started recently) and conventions. At conventions, you will typically find people who kinda overprice their products, but sometimes it's worth it, especially since some of them don't know their real value.
You can find amazing deals at yardsales, the problem is that the hardcore collectors go there as soon as they open (think 4-5 AM) and pretty much hunt for the goods, so sometimes you gotta be lucky.
Haven't bought online yet, but I'm strongly considering it. If anyone got recommendations on the matter, I'll gladly welcome them (buy in pack? singles? etc).
Also, if you're not afraid to reveal some of your power level, talk about it around you. You'd be surprised at the number of people who still have some of their old cards around. I got a whole binder from my cousin's stepbrother and a good amount of cards from the EX set from a friend that way.

Typically, you just drive around looking for signs.
Though, you can check craig's list for yardsale listings, assuming you live in the middle of bumfuck.
You can also download yardsale apps on yourphone. They take the CL listings, and drop them down as pins on a map so you can see how many are in each neighborhood. I use one called "Yardsale Rover"
You're still going to find the most by just driving around though. Keep an eye out for signs, and stop at EVERY thrift store you pass on the way.

I like visiting yardsales in general, feels like a little adventure, a scavenger hunt even. I like wandering around and observ what people put on display while looking for cards and other things that interest me (mainly old games, but it can be a bit of everything).
Yardsales are scheduled at the same places all the time here, so I just know when they happen basically. There is also a website listing all the yardsales scheduled for the upcoming months in my region.

What other TCG's lack in expensive nonholos they more than make up for in expensive holos. While I don't think any nonholo Trainer card, no matter how much it's used, should cost more than $5, the fact that it's the only nonholo Trainer card in the Standard format softens the impact just a little bit.

They're functionally identical to coins, but the only way to get them is to pay actual money. Meaning you can just pay cash to get anything you want from the shop, instead of grinding up coins.
Also, anything you buy with coins isn't trade-locked. So now you can buy tradable decks and packs directly from the client, or tradable promos from the bundles.
This is why promos like Jirachi and Regirock are so expensive. The only way to get a tradable copy of them is if someone in Canada bought it with real money.
The new reward wheel is pretty nice. I just got 375 coins from one of those packs. Wonder what else is there.

On ebay, you get code cards for $0.25 each, or less if you buy bulk. You can get 50~100 codes for $20, for example.
Pic related are the prices for gems in Canada, using Canadian money. Packs cost 100 gems and theme decks are 300 gems.
So they expect you to pay 1600%+ markup per pack. Which will be fun and games until they stop putting code cards in physical packs to save money.

Virtually useless, mainly because Wind Charm doesn't actually do anything in Standard right now. All it actually stops is Trevenant Break's attack on your bench and Stardust Jirachi's detach, neither of which are major enough to warrant running this.
And its attack is also very costly. A three-energy investment for 110 is very below-curve, and Water is a notoriously bad type.
The best way to run it would be with Palkia EX and Max Elixers, with Manaphy to switch it in when it's ready. But even then there are other, better techs for that combo, like Seismitoad, Regice, and AT Articuno.

You don't build around type in Pokemon, you pick a specific card or combo then build a deck around that.
When I said that Water was notoriously bad, I specifically meant that it had very few generic support cards that can fully carry an otherwise-bad deck.
All it really has is Dive Ball, Manaphy, and Archie's. While they're all great cards, they won't magically make a bad Water deck good, unlike generic support for most other types.

In Standard? The most viable would be Sceptile/Ariados. Ariados inflicts poison and Sceptile does more damage to poisoned enemies. Trevenant/Gengar also uses poison; Gengar's second attack deals solid damage and poisons the enemy, while simultaneously switching in a Trevenant to lock your opponent's items.
If you want to go off-meta, try Dragalge from BP. It two-shots any non-Mega for a single attach.
In Expanded, every other deck runs Hypnotoxic Laser and Virbank City Gym to deal bonus damage. Ignoring that, there's Plasma Crobat which had a brief period of viability a few years ago.

I'm inspired to play it after seeing a Dialga/Palkia LEGEND mill deck. Forcing your opponent to draw 20+ for game looks fun.
This new wheel seems really generous. 3 games, 50 coins, 100 coins and 1 RS pack. Apparently there's a new wheel for tournaments as well, can anyone tell how that one works?
My favorite thing is how I can't play Sacred Ash or Super Rod since it's always in my starting hand in every deck I play it, without fail. Removing them always helps my consistency against this client's awful RNG.

Control Panel > Uninstall a Program
Find PTCGO, and click "Change" and NOT "Uninstall"
In that window, uninstall it, then download a fresh installer from the website so you can reinstall.

Typicallyu, they're a variant of another card contained in the deck.
People use them for extra bling, and they're probably the most rare cards relative to the deck.
The pull rate for FAs in Generations is EXTREMELY high, however.

Well it's a combination of practically nobody having any HGSS cards or even early era B&W. I might be more interesting if they somehow make them more accessible. CoL packs for the tournament is a good start.

It's fine to buy an ETB for the tourney-legal dice and sleeves, pus a good box to store decks. But since you're getting packs either way better off to buy the one with the best bang for your buck.

My fav unlimited deck was carbink and staraptor, with hard charmed Bouffalant to tank while I prepped the other two.
I won so many matches by just shuffling people's megas back into their decks and never taking a prize card.
I can still use Staraptor/Bouff in legacy but it doesn't feel as satisfying.

under what measure? they are almost all the exact same price, full arts are worth more in japanese though. the only thing that's really easier to get in japanese is the basic EX cards, megas are a lot more difficult to obtain.

I trade what's tradable. Haven't looked into selling all my dubes yet, but I know it'll be a loss overall (though I am lucky a friend of mine also collect and just give me his dubes, so I have more cards to trade/sell than I should based on my investments).
I should try to buy all singles for a set once and see how much that'd cost me. But then I don't get the rush of opening packs, which is something I still like and seek.
