How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games)
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter standard/expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.
>if you don't know what deck you want to build yet, see http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/forum/tcg-competitive-play.156/ or check out tournament results for a list of viable decks

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. For example, Top Cut Trading inc
>http://forums.pokemontcg.com/topic/25163-the-top-cut-trading-inc-2/

Tips for Code Giveaways:
>Post them as an image with the QR code covered, don't just post it as plain text because of bots lurking threads
Unless your old cards are coveted and in good condition, they are probably worthless.

ToTT: Do you have a Pokemon type that you favor over others?

Yeah, wasn't a good time.
>>
I've been reading a lot of interviews and tournament reports now that states have gone through.

I see a lot of people teching in things like 1-2 Toad to slow down Night March, etc. For example, a Pokebeach article has a player running 1x Seismitoad EX, writing:
>Seismitoad-EX improves the [Night March] matchup to just above a 50-50, or even higher if the opponent is not prepared to play against Item lock.
>Against Entei, a single Seismitoad-EX can halt their high count of Item and Tool cards such as Muscle Band and Assault Vest, while also hitting for Weakness.

But if you're only running one (1) Seismitoad, how is this consistent or realistic? What are the odds of ever actually getting your one (1) Toad within the first two or three turns of the match where it actually matters? A Turn 7 Toad is a joke.

And it's not just Toad, I see people running 1 or 2 copies of all sorts of techs. Sure, I understanding teching a Supporter like Xerosic or Center Lady since VS Seeker exists, but how do you consistently get your 1x Muscle Band? Or that 1x Flash Energy? These decks aren't running Puzzle or Teammates, and even if they were it wouldn't really make it magically consistent.

What don't I understand here? These decks are winning tournaments so obviously they're not wrong, but can someone explain?

A basic notion on how to build a working deck

This isn't Magic, and types aren't archtypes like in YGO. Don't build around color, build around a specific Pokemon.

I'm building around M-Garde, but I found Whimsicott, Slurpuff and Xerneas useful. Also I don't have any Shaymins.

This would be Ok if it was Base Set. As in, 1999 base set.
Like >>25746466 said, build your deck around a gimmick, like Night March or Greninja Break. You need good card synergy, good draw power, and also just use the cards you need. Don't fill up your deck with useless crap. Just build a deck, do a couple of matches with it, change stuff you think needs to be changed and before you know it you will have a decent deck that doesnt get blown the fuck up after 3 turns.

Why is the wording so strange on Aromatisse?
Why doesn't it say 'As often as you like during your turn (before your attack) you may move any number of fairy energy from any of your pokemon to another of your pokemon'

I've always thought the wording is just so strange. Any mechanical reason for the wording?
>>
>>25747283

well the singularity in the original wording helps prevent you from being a mega retard and moving more than one double dragon/wonder energy from a dragon/fairy pokemon to a non dragon/fairy pokemon

otherwise I'm not sure
>>
>>25747283

It doesn't seem strange to me. It just means that you can use the ability as many times as you want to move as many fairy energies as you want during your turn.

How would you word it?

One- and three-pack US blister promos for XY10 have been revealed.

Three-pack:

Vivillon – Grass – HP120
Stage 2 – Evolves from Spwepa

[C] Dizzying Poison: Your opponent’s Active Pokemon is now Confused and Poisoned.

[G] Powder: 30+ damage. This attack does 30 more damage for each [R] Energy attached to your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

The other three-pack promo is a holo reprint of BP Froakie.

The one-pack promos are holo reprints of BT Gastly and BT Pansear.

So we get a shitty Vivillon and three nfe basic reprints.

it's simple. play the card when the matchup calls for it, discard it when it don't. trainer techs are easy. with trainers mail, ultra ball, vs seeker etc its not hard to hit those 1 ofs at all. unless its prized, it can come in handy. sometimes one good turn is all you need to put the odds in your favor.
>>
>>25748744
rocket was probably still Haymaker. except now with Dark plume

Skyridge had shit like Scizor Furret decks or whatever. seems like a slow n dull meta. ninetales blaziken was a thing when rs had just came out.
>>
>>25751685
>play the card when the matchup calls for it
Yes, let me magically get my 1x Toad and DCE in hand within the first two turns. Toad decks in their prime that ran 4x of the fucker still occasionally missed that T1 lock. Not to mention shit like actually getting it into the active.

How often are you going to pull that T1 1x Toad + DCE against NM?

garchomp can do ok against night march with a well timed rachi special discard. usually good idea when ur opponents hand is small. Absolute garbage. 120 for 3 energy, even if one of them is DDE, is way below par. However, when pic related comes out, it may be possible to build a deck around it. And yes, there is a Spirit Link.

M Garchomp-EX – Dragon – HP210
Mega Evolution – Evolves from Garchomp-EX

When 1 of your Pokemon becomes a Mega Evolution, your turn ends.

[W][F][F][C] Crimson Edge: 180 damage. This Pokémon does 10 damage times the number of damage counters on it to itself.

When a Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Ok, stop right there.
NEVER build a deck around a type, that is the number one mistake new players make. Build the deck around your best card and cards that support it.
>>
>>25755931
hmmm... so i dont know what by best card is. I have Walrein who I like quite a bit, kyogre and suicune, greninja, Shinx, and electivire (who I dont care for as much). Are any of these cards worth a damn?

My friend has garchomp (the EX killing one that only takes likes 1 energy) Trevenent (the one that makes basics pay extra energy to attack) and Aegislash. What would you recommend he focuses down on?
>>
>>25755926

>Meanwhile, SIX out of the eleven best decks in the format aren't EX decks AND don't run "EX-hate"
???
I legitimately don't understand why new players hate EX as a concept. Do they think rare = good? Are they mad they can't afford cards that are marginally more expensive than the rest? There's no logic.
>>
>tfw have more fun playing theme than standard and expanded

I might actually just keep buying theme decks with my tokens even though they suck
>>
>>25755963
All of those cards are garbage, do not run them. Instead here is a list of good Electric and Water Pokemon:

As for Electric, you have Raikou from BREAKthrough, Jolteon EX and Pikachu EX which have synergy with other Electric types like Eelektrik from Noble Victories (expanded) and Magnezone from BREAKthrough (standard).

You also have Raichu from XY/Generations that is Electric but only uses colorless energy so you could mix it with other Pokemon that do require specific energies.

Lastly, and this may be more up your ally, you have M-Manectrix EX, which can be mixed with Water Pokemon because its attack allows you to accelerate any type of basic energy onto your benched Pokemon. And then you can run Rough Seas which allows you to heal 30 from all your Water and Electric Pokemon.

As for the best Water Pokemon to pair with M-Manectric, you have Suicune from Plasma Blast (expanded) or Regice from Ancient Origins (standard), as well as Seismitoad EX.

Greninja from XY and BREAKpoint can also be its own deck by itself.
>>
>>25755999
I would like theme more if the theme decks were at least mildly competitive in how they're built.

Every other card game has theme decks that come with multiple staples and ratios that you'd see in an actual standard deck. The decks are good enough that you can buy three or four of them, slap them together, and win a locals with them against actual meta.

Meanwhile, Pokemon decks are unironically running 20 energies and a pair of Potions.
>>
>>25756023
What is the preferred numbers of energies?
>>
>>25756038
An overwhelming majority of decks run 4-8 energies.
Some special cases might run as many as 12. I've never seen a deck with more than that.
>>
>>25756006
>M-Manectrix EX
That sounds like a fuckin plan. I already have the manectrix line, and like them. Alright, besides rough seas, do you have any other recommendations for trainer cards?
>>
>>25756047
That seems so lean. How do they not get energy screwed? what if two of them get trapped as prize cards? do you just have to run 4x prof letter?
>>
>>25756064
>do you just have to run 4x prof letter?
lol

No, actual decks have enough draw support to guarantee you get what you need. Between Sycamore, Birch, Shauna, N, Colress, Teammates, Acro Bike, Trainers' Mail, VS Seeker, Shaymin, Battle Compressor, and so on, it would be really difficult NOT to get one of your 8 energies. Standard decks go through half their deck on the first turn.

If you haven't figured it out, there's no reason in ever having more than one energy in your hand at a time, since you can only attach one per turn. Having two energies in hand means you have at least one dead card.

Of course, running 8 energies would never work in theme, because TPL's idea of a draw engine is a single Tierno and a Great Ball.

If you don't believe me:
http://www.pokemon.com/us/play-pokemon/state-province-championships-2016/decks/week-one/
Here are eight decks that won their respective state championships last week. You can use the dropdown up top to switch between them.

The only exceptions are the Sceptile deck, since Sceptile relies on having lots of energies in hand, the Ho-oh deck that needs to run four different energy types, and the Yveltal deck that needs to hit Max Elixer.

>>25756104
What doesn't sound fun about that?
Unlike in theme, you can consistently play the cards and combos you put together in your deck, because you can actually draw into them. The game becomes less "let's pray I topdeck part of what I need" and more "let me actually play a game against my opponent instead of draw RNG".
>>
>>25756104

Im coming from two other TCGs that have this same problem, where turns end up being playing 6 cards that all let you draw and toolbox and so forth, tossing the pace of the game out the window. I was hoping pokemon would be a basic and slow paced game for the most part. but this is no different than Yu-gi-oh vanguard MTG stuff. >>
>>25756178
I really don't get it. What's wrong with drawing a lot of cards? What's wrong with getting to actually play your deck, or play against your opponent?

It sounds like you want to play some RNG simulator, where the point is to see what card you draw into every turn instead of actually formulating a strategy and outplaying your opponent. As opposed to actually having options and plays in your hand.

Try Hearthstone. I'm serious.

Every game we play, like video games and card games, all have a broken card.

Once someone finds a new broken strategy, everyone will play that one.
But really, if you play your cards right, you can beat any deck, if done right.

Alot of people don't like EX cards because they are broken, and also pricy.
But what fun would it be, if they didn't have super rare cards, that has crazy power.
>>
>>25756222
>Alot of people don't like EX cards because they are broken, and also pricy.
Thank you for confirming what you really meant.
EX Pokemon haven't won a majority of Standard tournaments since the rotation. This whole meta is NM vs Trev vs Greninja vs Vespiquen/Vileplume.
You have Yveltal and Manectric splashed in there, but that's it. EX is old hat and will probably be irrelevant come the next rotation.

You're right, though. Every card game DOES have something in common. It's not "broken" shit, though; it's players that prefer to complain instead of actually play the game, who like to scapegoat a mechanic or a deck instead of blaming themselves.
>>
>>25756243
I think it's a bit presumptuous to assume the EX mechanic is completely dead come rotation. But yes your point about EX's no longer being the end-all be-all is correct.
>>
>>25756209
I think the problem for me is that there's very little back and forth between the players in this type of deck, especially in Pokemon where you can't do anything in your opponents turn besides watch.

I legitimately don't understand. Draw cards in a Standard deck take up no more than, what, 8-16 cards in the deck? In Pokemon, that leaves you with 44 other cards to customize and build the way you want. Run your favorite Pokemon line, run some trainers and techs that you think are good, whatever you want. Draw power just lets you access what you need, when you need it, letting you actually express yourself and the theme of your deck instead of praying to the RNG and hoping you actually get to play what you built.

>Also dont hit me with that shit like I have to lean on RNGs
I didn't mean you specifically, I meant decks that don't run draw or toolbox options like in theme format. If you're not drawing a surplus of cards, or if you're not searching out the cards you need...how are you getting your cards in your hand? You're just topdecking, which is pure RNG. "Oh, I luckily drew into the energy I needed this turn", etc.

What are the rules regarding using older cards from early sets? I understand that most early cards are completely unviable simply due to the power creep. But let's say there is a good card from an early set, can it be used?

Are there cards from early sets that are still used competitively?

Also, when did the power creep occur? Was it slow and gradual? Or was there just a new set of cards that came out that took shit from 0-100?

The Wizards of the Coast really shot themselves in the foot when they made cards with such a low amount of HP and damage, Nintendo rectified that it seems...

Basic Energies are universal, for older cards being reprinted you might as well use the newest version since some of them might have their effects changed
