I asked in the previous thread about my STR build but while thinking things over, I started wondering if I should put the last five levels towards ARC so I can use the HMS and whatever tools that would allow for. Is the HMS worth it on a pure STR or should I put the points elsewhere?
>>
>>147189158
18 Arc is a decent investment on a Str HLMS build.
>>
Is there an objectively better option for non-BT builds in PVP in terms of guns between Hunter's Pistol/Blunderbuss/Ludwig's Rifle?
>>
>>147190315
Repeating pistol if you want to do damage. I usually have it and a hunter pistol equipped. I use the hunter pistol for parries and the repeating pistol (w/BMA) for damage.
>>
>>147190315
Use the Blunderbuss with specific gems you can turn it into a fucking cannon. Don't listen to lucy he hasn't actually played PvP in ages and has like 200 hours tops.

Hunters forever will be doomed to suffer from blood-addling and be drawn into the Hunter's Nightmare for being part of a tradition that helped massacre an entire village.
>>
>>147191630
but why involve random Yharnamites as well? they did nothing wrong, but they too suffer from Bloodlust and blood-addling. Hell, you even find normie hunters in the Nightmare. The Orphan is one petty-ass motherfucker
>>
>>147191630
Why was everyone in the Nightmare trying to hide the secret and the Orphan? I imagine it was out of shame, but wouldn't they want the Nightmare to end as well?
>>
>>147192046
Why would they want the nightmare to end? It's pretty safe to assume the curse is going to continue. The Nightmare functions as a convenient prison/asylum.
>>
>>147192046
I always thought that the Church was trying to hide the Orphan as a means of trying to cut their losses, and shame
>have a staff of Hunters
>half of them are perpetually half blood-drunk
>allow access to a pocket dimension of endless, consequence-free slaughter
>that also contains massively bad PR for the organization
the predictable happens. Plus, you've got a precedent for Hunters betraying the Church after getting set loose in the Nightmare, like Maria, so best cut bait and run

>>147192368
no. Hunters only show up in the Nightmare upon death. Nightmare or no Nightmare, the HoH or similar organizations would still need to go around and clean up the blood-drunk Hunters. Until the Orphan dies, blood-drunkenness will still plague the Hunters and Yharnam, and so it's in everyone's best interests for it to end

>>
>>147191847
Random Yharnamites were never involved. The Yharnamites that are in the Nightmare were Hunters. Remember your Ludwig lore.
>>
>>147187953
Rancid beasts, every last one of us...
>>
>>147192610
But I was wondering why Maria, someone trapped in the Nightmare but still obviously somewhat sane, was trying to hide the Orphan. Doesn't seem like there's a clear answer, though.
>>
>>147193385
I meant normie Yharnamites, who weren't tied to the Dream, is all.
>>
>>147193561

>>
>>147193468
Shame?
>>
>>147193632

>>
>>147192046
I don't know about everyone. For the most part the Hunters there seem pretty unaffiliated with each other. The ones in the Clocktower are probably just insane and doing what they would have done in the real world, or manifestations of someone else's subconscious, behaving similarly to how they were remembered.

In the case of Brador, he never cut off affiliation with the Church in spite of his circumstances. But he's obviously fucked up in the head. Ludwig is similar, but he's debatably even crazier than Brador due to his predicament.

Besides Maria, Ludwig and Brador are the only person I can think of trying to hide the secret. Simon, the only other Hunter with his sanity (Maria and Brador are fucked up) besides the player, is trying to uncover it.
>>
>>147193468
well, we know that she felt intense guilt over her actions with the Church, and with helping the Hunters in Byrgenwerth.

I had always thought that she was responsible for the creation of the Hunter's Nightmare. The Nightmare serves as an army that protects the fishing hamlet -- any interloper who arrives in the Nightmare to fuck up the Orphan has to get through a literal army of blood-crazed, rabid Hunters and beasts. Good luck. Even the MC isn't "expected" to be able to do so until they're end-game level, which makes them among the most powerful creatures in the whole universe. It's a pretty efficient security system desu.
>>
>>147193794
Yeah, "everyone" was a mistake. I realized right after that I was really just referring to Maria and Brador.
>>
>>147193468
>Still obviously somewhat sane.
Just because she's composed and soft-spoken doesn't mean she's not batshit anon. But I agree with what the others posted. It was probably shame and regret.

>>147193561
Yeah, those guys don't appear in the Nightmare. If they weren't Hunters they're not there.
>>
>>147193794
Ludwig isn't trying to protect anything, he only attacks you because he's a crazy beast.
>>
>>147193613
Well, they've gone nuts with blood-addling and are stuck in the Nightmare as a result. I'd say that's pretty cursed.

>>147193379
What I'm proposing is the idea that the Blood didn't drive people mad with bloodlust until AFTER Byrgenwerth fucked up the Orphan. The Orphan's "curse of Blood" was making the stuff addictive

>>147193941
you can be a Hunter and not be tied to the Dream. Wasn't that Ludwig's whole gimmick, raising an army of such people?
>>
>>147194103
Everyone in the Nightmare is either a hunter, a beast or a fishing hamlet inhabitant.
>>
>>147193951
I don't think he's there protecting anything intentionally, I just assumed he was being used as something of a guard dog even if he wasn't aware of it.

>>147194103
Yeah, you can be a Hunter and not be tied to the dream. That Ludwig thing is precisely what I was talking about. The Hunters he raised were probably drawn into the Nightmare after becoming blood-addled, but the point I was trying to make is that they didn't need to be connected to the Hunter's Dream beforehand to be confined to the Nightmare. I think we just misunderstood each other though.
>>
>>147194180
are the fishing hamlet guys even "real," (as in, people ported into the Nightmare), or are they just projections of people who existed IRL?
>>
>>147194336
The fishing hamlet itself was ripped from the waking world and placed in the nightmare imo

>>
>>147194719
Willem got things started, but he also warned everyone of the dangers of blood. Laurence then proceeded to completely not listen and start the Healing Church, and then later he called in the Moon Presence which made things only a whole new level of fucked-up.

So I'd say that Laurence deserves plenty of blame too.
>>
>>147195103
Laurence called the MP before he even left Byrgenwerth, since Willem apparently knew that Gehrman was trapped in the Dream.

IMO they called the MP to deal with the Chalice Dungeons
>have Hunters spelunkan in the CDs
>come across uber-superhuman beings
>try and fight them as normal human beings
>lol no
they called the MP to progress their research

If you feel like you're doing good damage you don't need to level, you need to work on your dodging.
If your damage is too low upgrade your weapon and get better gems. Blood level isn't very important, and 53 is enough for Rom.

Mergo died at birth and the calcified remains compose the Yharnam stone. The version you encounter is just their consciousness trapped in a nightmare realm similar to the orphan. Killing the nurse probably frees them which would explain why queen Yharnam bows her head in gratitude afterwards.

The Moon Presence has a lot of connections to Queen Yharnam, so it may have just been trying to help.

The Eldritch Truth is the mere existence of these things at all. That's sort of the whole point of cosmic horror, that these totally out there bizarre things exist at odds to what we thought we knew about the universe. Eldritch is an antiquated word that just means weird or strange, it just got popularized through post-Lovecraft writers and has now come to mean very specifically weird alien shit.

What are the odds of a new From game similar to Bloodborne? I know that sequels suck but if we got something similar to what Dark Souls was to Demon Souls (similar setting/gameplay but different world/lore) then it could be golden.

I LITERALLY can't get excited for any games nowadays, Bloodborne was that good for me and I just need something similar from Fromsoft.

>>

Deathmarch isn't that bad, probably the best one there. If the lute animations played different notes that were thoughtfully selected it could be pretty cool.

Beastblade is fine but a bit boring. Gillian's would look out of place in Bloodborne even with the Powder Kegs, it's a bit underdesigned for them. Starlighter has a good design but would be redundant considering arcane builds already have blacksy eye and augur.

Starslayer looks bad.

Why do people keep using Dark Souls 2 and 3 as an example? The problems with Dark Souls 3 were fatigue, nothing more. It was a fantastic game that is better than the first one in more ways than not. DaS2 was the B team.

There have been 4 Souls games set in a near identical setting that was already pretty generic.

How is Bloodborne 2, (that would essentially be another Lovecraft/Victorian setting) even remotely comparable?

DaS3 was fine, but as I said before, the setting has worn out it's welcome. People are burnt out on the Souls setting, and it's replayability took a huge hit as a result. From games live and die by the playerbase's willingness to explore the world and learn more about it, and they don't do this if they're bored with the world.

Fatigue is why making sequels to "souls-like" games is a mistake, no matter how good the game is to newcomers

People us DS2/3 as examples of why we don't want a BB2 because of the serious perceived downgrade in quality, with DS2 being near universally reviled for a whole host of reasons and DS3 being generally seen as a disappoint to a lot of people.

Miyazaki has apparently stated he doesn't like sequels. Bloodborne is a perfectly concise, tight story and setting, it doesn't need a sequel. Miyazaki went on to Bloodborne after DS1, supervising DS2 only, while another team without his direction made it. Another major problem is we now know the twist of the game. You can't replicate that again. Either B Team will come along and say 'no it was actually something ELSE all along!' or they'll delve waaaay too deep and explain absolutely everything away, ruining the point of the game. There is nothing you can do.

What Bloodborne could use is some more minor DLC, like a cape option, or a mid-sized new area to explore with some cool little story attached that, like the Hunter's Nightmare, doesn't necessarily affect the base game's story.

It really is not. This is a better, more fitting description for Demon's Souls, not Bloodborne. Bloodborne is kind of a mess, it leaves way too much open that you can't really make too much sense out of. You could certainly try. You could certainly get close, but none of it is really satisfying. I agree though, it doesn't need a sequel, because a sequel would fucking ruin it regardless. What it needs is more DLC.
>>
>>147204389
>>147204432
>How is it possible to have Victorian/Lovecraftian fatigue when there are a total of 1~ game that I know of with that setting?

Because one of the things that made Bloodborne big was the sudden reveal that it's not just mad doctors and werewolves, that the Gothic exterior was just the surface level of an entire background of cosmic horror. You can't do that reveal again, you can't discover those weird secrets again. Part of the truly unique charm of the game is wandering through the Forbidden Woods and finding weird blue mushroom men, and then Byrgenwerth, and then Rom, noticing how these are really really clashing with the werewolves and hunters in long coats being stylish, then the Nightmare and Amygdalae perched on every single goddman building and finding you were in a cosmic horror story all along. That reveal is gone.

What else can you do that isn't just more of the same? What can you add that doesn't ruin the weird mystery of the original game that left you wondering but unable to ever truly comprehend the scope of the horror? You can't just trick us again and say something else is behind it all, that's a shit cop out. Bloodborne is too tightly designed to revisit again in a full game. Some small, non-connected DLCs? Sure, I'd love that, but an entire game just seem infeasible.

The thing about BB is that it has a tightly confined story as well that has a clear ending.
In DS you could just be like, "oh well the fire is going out again, better release a new game so nameless 20 something year olds can keep it going since this is what they want so much I guess?".

BB's story revolves around one place with game mechanics and weaponry that are specific to that place and the point of history that place is in.

The only way I can see a sequel sort of working is if they have a story where scholars want to use technology to ascend to becoming great ones there by bringing in the industrial age to Yarhnam and the areas that surround it.
Suddenly Yarhnam is a place people go to because its the center of manufacturing and technology, not because of blood healing. Eventually the scholars use a machine to recreate the ritual of Mensis and actually capture a great one with it, which beckons more great ones to Yarhnam and there by plunges the entirety of Yarhnam into a nightmare.
And you the player character are using steam punkish trick weapons to outright stop the great ones or scholars?

fuck it idk
>>
>>147204946
>it leaves way too much open that you can't really make too much sense out of

But that's the whole idea. It's a cosmic horror story, it's based in the genre of weird fiction, whose purpose as a genre is to create horror stories in which the protagonists and by extensions readers are left ultimately with an event that by all rights shouldn't have happened, but did, it's a mystery. Lovecraft used it to get across a specific concept of human limitation and ignorance, and the fact that even though we become a squid, we still don't truly understand the ramifications and background to all that transpired, and you can't. It's a Gothic tragedy of cosmic proportions.
>>

>>
>>147204568

>No, Dark Souls 1 is its own story, setting and universe

So that's how you define rehashes? Going by that argument most Mario/Zelda games aren't rehashes. Uncharted 2 and 3 aren't rehashes.

Mechanically, Dark Souls 1 is a complete rehash.

>>147204617

>BB's setting is wrapped up in a neat little bow. There's nothing new to add that wouldn't be CYCLES tier garbage, or overexplaining backstory. And with nothing new, interest wanes

And who said it would have to be a direct continuation of BBs story or even its lore? Why not another Dark Souls tier sequel (relative to Demon Souls)?

>>147205057

>Because one of the things that made Bloodborne big was the sudden reveal that it's not just mad doctors and werewolves

Not really, I was totally spoiled on that and the game is still a 10/10 GOAT master piece to me.

I just don't see any valid arguments as to why we shouldn't get a Bloodborne type game from Fromsoft in a similar setting.
>>
>>147205057
That reveal is gone, but with a story like this one there's so much more to explore. A story does not need some grand reveal or twist to be good. A story does not need to be complex or baffling to be interesting.

We could explore the background of the Great Ones or see the beginnings of the outbreak. Find out more about the surrounding lands and if they have similar problems. There's a very deep world that's been built here and it has a lot of holes that leaves a lot of possibilities for a sequel without destroying the first.
>>
>>147205405
>Why not another Dark Souls tier sequel (relative to Demon Souls)?

I was, too, but looking at how the game handled its themes, it's a fucking masterpiece. If I hadn't known about the cosmic horror, I would have shit myself because there isn't a game out there today that does it anywhere near as tastefully as Bloodborne. That cosmic horror reveal really matters.

>I just don't see any valid arguments as to why we shouldn't get a Bloodborne type game from Fromsoft in a similar setting.

Oh, I'd love that, too. I want fast paced visceral action with sick ass 18th century style. I just don't want more Bloodborne, because it's perfect as it is.

Not if its done properly. Remember that we know very little about them. This game didn't exactly give you a concise history and background, nor should it. There's a lot of room for things to learn without giving a full history or eliminating their unknown quality.
>>
>>147205586
But this goes completely against the core concept of cosmic horror. It's absolutely anithetical to WHY the genre was a horror genre. If it's all explained away, you just have another dark fantasy setting with pointless Lovecraft references for surface flavour. Bloodborne's willingess to tell you fuck all is what makes it basically one of the best pieces of modern cosmic horror media in several fucking decades. God knows people have tried, and have mostly failed, but Bloodborne handles it all very tastefully. As a lifelong Lovecraft who sees this stuff get mauled by people who don't know the source material, Bloodborne will forever hold a place in my heart.

I get kind of pissy when people say this because the idea of just informing the player that there is a larger world beyond the scope of the game is just to enrich the game world but the difference between those places and the place you're exploring is that they are just normal ordinary places with nothing exciting going on in them.
Yeah it would be nice to see Catarina or see where Eileen comes from but neither of those places have a scourge or undead/dying world problem. They're just meant to be concepts for the player to think about while they play the game, if you did actually visit them they'd be really boring most likely.

It can be explaine partially. There are a few things we know now for sure. Not much, but some. If we know 5%, for example, we might learn an additional 5% of what there is to know about them. That still leaves us with very little knowledge over all but a lot of material to work with nonetheless.

It's unlikely that there's absolutely nothing going on anywhere but here and here happens to have walking dead, beasts, and horrors from the cosmos. And this is a malleable world, what makes you think they couldn't craft a story about a connected land in the story they created?

We could definitely explore the things they've done and the way they've affected other people without ruining their charm. Although I suppose what I'm suggesting here is that, that anon is correct, we could see other Great Ones and how they've affected civilization elsewhere. Or some familiar faces and how they've affected civilization elsewhere, etc.
