It's not like riding a bike at all. Guitar is. Piano, maybe. But picking up violin for the first time in years feels like starting all over again. Hell, it's easier to pick up a mandolin for the first time and instantly know how to play violin songs you used to know on it than it is to actually start playing violin again.

Cyberpunk has always been sort of a counter-culture genre. Internally, they're almost always stories about lonely individuals embedded in systems and technologies that are pervasive but otherwise foreign to the common man.

It's strange to think that we've already glossed over our own cyberpunk age, never realizing as it flew by. Look back at the 80's and 90's when nerdy hobbyists and kids were able to exploit these emerging technologies that nobody really understood, but they were starting to control the world nonetheless. It was those kids and hobbyists who, despite being marginalized for their unique and poorly understood aptitudes, took the system for a ride, taking it places where nobody ever thought it could go. Phone Phreaks called each other around the world with nothing but a whistle or a tonepad, and they shared this information wherever they could. People established BBSes and began to build up this sort of underground knowledge community, and the operations and motivations of these groups were often very anarchist in nature. It was a new frontier, and regulation and rules had no place in that world. They were very punk. They were very cyberpunk.

Drugs were pretty core to the old cyberpunk. Toss in some Philip K. Dick.

Snow Crash is a novel that revealed the cyberpunk genre to the masses because everything Neal Stephenson writes sells a million copies. The difference in the way the book is structured is that the technology is no longer emerging, no longer misunderstood. It's a book where everyone has a cellphone, where programmers make up the majority of the workforce, and where everyone hangs out in cyberspace. Now, it's still punk; the main character is just as isolated and underground as in cyberpunk, but he's an employee now. This is all mainstream, even if he is very good at what he does.

Everyone has come to accept that corporations control the government, computers have become ever more pervasive while only a few actually understand how they work, and mass government surveillance have become a fact of life. The old "drugs and exploits" communities still exist, they just moved (and shrank a bit).

Kind of an interesting post I found on Reddit :

Hey there, Brian here from Ysbryd (VA-11 Hall-A's publisher). Thanks for hanging out, u/magmasafe! We also brought Michael aka u/GaroadMusic to represent the game at PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth last year.

As for Chris and Fernando, we totally wanted to fly them over for both PAX events. Did You Know: When you tell the Venezuelan government you're going to America for a "gaming convention", they have a rather dim opinion about the legitimacy of such business, especially when you're an indie dev... so they think you're trying to flee the country. No prizes for guessing whether the two of them got their visas approved.

To think, we could have saved them already if Ysbyrd wasn't shit.

Cyberpunk was enamored with this discovery of unlimited connectivity and the merging of man and machine. It toyed with this core idea that you can reach out and touch someone in a virtual space, even though you were planets apart.

Drugs were pretty important. Cyberspace is essentially an out-of-body experience.

The silly thing is that we've already embraced the virtual world and made it part of ourselves and the world around us. When they were imagining this stuff, the cyberpunks overshot what they thought would be the minimum requirement for what people needed to willingly throw themselves into the digital 'sprawl' and start living there full time. They thought you needed to be emerged body and soul.

It turns out, all we needed was Facebook.

>>146831115
We're in a post-punk world. The hackers of the old world gave up on their underground revolution and became the cornerstones of this amorphous global entity within which we sometimes recognize the mega corporations that founded it. Technology is everywhere; it's no longer the exclusive tool of the savant or the rebel.

I guess it needs to be said that the character of the megacorp in cyberpunk was meant to be an update to the image of the government as the enemy-in-control. The narrative was that megacorporations were enveloping the world in these new technologies, weaving the threads of a power structure that threatens build chains not of police and prison, but of product placement and consumption overload. However, this is just business as usual; the real danger is that the technologies leveraged by these corporations have come from pandora's box and nobody really knows what they're going to do.

Google knows exactly what they're doing.

Throw Wargames into the list of cyberpunk movies to watch. It's actually pretty good.

>It turns out, all we needed was Facebook.

That's incredibly depressing all in of itself. Not just because it feels like wasted potential, either.

>>146832465
>it's no longer the exclusive tool of the savant or the rebel.

On this, though, I diagree. Even a non-exclusive tool can still be an important tool in a rebelion, even in a punky style. Turn the tools of the oppressors against themselves, use their tools for your own purposes, find ways to bring about a counter-culture to the one they wish to instill, I think that still finely counts as punk.

Or maybe I just wish as such.

Another thing cyberpunk got absolutely wrong is the sinister plots by corporations trying to take over the world.

You often had the evil guys trying to take over the way people think with some kind of mind control virus or through complicated technology that enslaved everybody to their will.

Turns out all you need to achieve that is a few billion in the bank and the will to fund a few NGOs.

Dorothy could be a great friend, but any sort of relationship with a person that has slept around that much is a major red flag. That shit changes people, lilim or not.

Also one topic I wish the game had addressed more is how lilim view themselves as beings. When Dorothy was acting all odd because nothing seemed real I was hoping they would go somewhere but it never did. One of the most interesting conversations in the game was the ones about brain upload and you'd think that would be a hot topic for the bots but it was never brought up for them. I mean they act like they are immortal but if the consciousness in their body dies (as in they are physically destroyed or corrupted) then the one that gets downloaded from the master server is just a copy, one still died. Unless they are controlled wirelessly but that didn't seem likely.

Not in my run, no. Lilim being immortal is bullshit. Might as well call humans with backup clones immortals.
>>
>>146835908
A Lilim is conditionally immortal, since their backups are probably synced with their live selves. A human with a backup clone is not the same, since those become two independent entities at that point.

I believe they touched on the distinction at some point in time, how Lilim can be deployed in pairs with the same parameters but evolve into two entirely different people over time.

Being perfectly synced with a backup doesn't mean that one consciousness won't stop the moment one is destroyed. They are only functionally immortal, their current selves will die if their current device is destroyed.

In theory you can technically copy and restore that backup to many different bodies, proving that each is a different entity entirely.

I like the scenario for this and if you never think about it you can die and be replaced without anyone noticing. I wish at least one of the Lilim addressed this in the game though.

For context this subject matter was tackled in the game Soma and they did a wonderful job with it in that game.

I thought modern Lilim were constantly connected to a collective consciousness of sorts so they never truly knew a sense of mortality.
>>
>>146836223
>>
>>146836859

As I said before, if they are wirelessly connected to a central hub 100% of the time then yes, they are immortal unless said hub is destroyed. I didn't really get that from "collective consciousness" though.
>>
>>146836859
Yes and no. They are constantly connected but they can comprehend not being connected and thus have a sense of mortality, despite what most believe. According to Dorothy anyway.

>"I've been reading up on your documentation, Dorothy. I think I have a firm grasp on your API."
>She's quivering, the sound of a whirring fan can be heard. She's been working hard all day, you can feel the heat radiating off of her from arm's reach away. She's too focused to respond, but she's listening, waiting for your input.
>"You can put a pause on that for now. We'll check the blocks later, I want you to focus on something else for now."
>She gasps and falls forward to her knees. She's exhausted; liquid coolant begins to emerge from her nano-porous skin. It's a faint blue color that boils almost immediately into a clear vapor. There's now a slight musk emerging in the room slightly reminiscent of ethanol.
>"I just finished writing these. Just a bunch of anonymous functions. Do you remember the last time we played around with monads?"
>She begins to tilt her head upwards, the synthetic hair falling away from her eyes in wet clumps. You see that her pupils are dilated, inside a blank and endless cavity. She's looking straight at you as she begins to speak labored words, but barely anything can be heard.
>"Oh, I must have switched off my earpiece. Have you seen my phone, I need to get this paired again.."
>A soft hand lands on your thigh. There's a certain squishy nature to the skin that you can still feel through the fabric of your jeans, the consistency is almost like that of those tapioca pearls that you sometimes order in your bubble tear. The sensation is accentuated by the feeling of armadillo-shell steel ribs that make up the contours of her knuckles and joints. She begins to rise up from the floor, one hand braced against your leg while the other advances forward to slide within the breast pocket of your jacket.
>"Oh right, I left it in there. Thanks."
>You begin to unlock the pgone as her arms retreat to her sides, swinging and hanging limp as she breathes heavily.
>"Wow, you're almost overheating. Let me put you on standby."
