I could be a lot better off right now--both in art and other areas--if I hadn't been so diligent in SL.

Is it worth it? That's relative to what your goal is.
For me (since I want to be an illustrator / character concept artist) it caused severe skill imbalance while consuming more time than a real job and paying as little as a fast food shift manager; therefore yes, SL was holding me back. I am better off working a real job and using my spare time to practice art.
So maybe...if you're an aspiring artist...keep this in mind and learn from my mistake.
