How's this for a building style? Going full above-ground town, save for a quarry/mine and occasional basements. The stone is diorite and the wood is willow, both blocks. I'm planning to make it pretty dense with the buildings, with three-tile-wide paved roads, probably also diorite blocks, and a wall to cap it all off once I'm done. Any suggestions?

Maybe. Adobe buildings are a thing, and clay slat roofs as well. Also most bricks used for residential construction irl are made from clay (in the US at least). It could make a nice aesthetic theme for your city, or even just a sector of it. Perhaps stone blocks for structural elements (corners, pillars, doorways, etc) and clay bricks for walls and/or roofs? Just a thought. Keep in mind that anything you would use wood for you could use clay for instead; it will just cost 3 extra jobs to turn a log into a brick. 1 to gather the clay, 1 to turn the wood into charcoal, and 1 to turn the charcoal into a clay block. There's no mechanical benefit to doing so, it would just be an aesthetic thing. Unless you have fire clay, whose products are more valuable than wood.

Whenever I build above ground, I build massive supports to everything.

>channel a huge rectangle 1 z down
>fill the whole damn thing with stone walls
>construct building onto that

Downside is you have to dig small service tunnels to finish the support but you can cover them with hatch covers and call them storm cellars.
Upside is your dwarves have 1z of stone beneath their feet, also you get rid of excess stones.

Not even close. Everyone knows that Tolkien dorfs are based on ancient jews, and the dwarves in DF share the chief characteristics of those dwarves.

The TES dwemer, who also seem to have made a source of inspiratio, are obviously based on Assyrians, which come pretty close to ancient Israelites.

The monumental architecture and masonry associated with dwarves also speaks against the nordic dorf theory.

>Soap.

Soap is the only item dwarves will use to sterilize a wound. While dwarves are of course aware that humans will pour perfectly quaffable alcohol over their bloody wounds and onto the filthy ground to get the same effect, dwarves understand that some things are more precious than a single life, and face oblivion with a bit more dignity. Application of extreme heat is also well known to prevent infections and seal a wound, but dwarves consider magma the only legitimate heat source, and the non-lethal application of magma a sacrilege.

>>
>>135489561

If there is a single cheese maker coming I slaughter the entire wave of migrants
>>
>>135489561
The amount of wild animal people is controlled by the level of "savagery" in a given region. Idon't know exactly what triggers animal person populations to settle in civilisations, but it might have to do with how tolerant those civilisations are towards other races and cultures.

Human civs have randomised values, so it MIGHT be that you got an exceptionally tolerant human civ, with an exceptionally large animal person population.

Elves... goblins...

How are they related to one another in the DF universe?

I guess this will have a different answer for each genned world as soon as the myth release is out.

Any fishing labor works to build a fishery. Dwarves prioritize fishing to building a fishery, though. Or to almost anything else.

There kind of are. Every syndrome producing fb's syndrome is randomly generated. I don't know if euphoria is a possible effect, but dizziness, numbness, nausea, and narcolepsy are all possible. It wouldn't be called beer and dwarves wouldn't get a happy thought from drinking it, but it's almost there.

It's the second time my dwarves make an artifact depicting THIS elf in a positive/neutral manner, what the fuck is wrong with them?
>>
>war hammer
>ha ha, nope, enjoy your 3 ton wheelbarrow

So I read that Cado's magical journey story and a lot of the shit in there is possible with dfhack and mods. Launch can replicate a lot of the telekinesis effects, and abuse of hyperspeed is indeed devastating.

I don't have a thing where I can point and say "die" but I can spit and set people on fire.

Also have an idea what that "force your fist through the future" thing is like from the onepunch script I put together to crank an attack velocity waaaaaaay up, bodies flying to the edge of the screen and dying in mid-air type stuff.

Being able to "mine" open a wall with magic instead of advfort.

Being able to heal others with some syndrome getting more pronounced side-effects on yourself is basically possible now (jack up their recuperation, give yourself something using the concentration effects, though the bark/branches might be tricky to do) with some clever interactions.

Having something like the tracking interface with different colors/different symbols for magical energy flows/ley lines would be neat too.

Your fort is probably in the region that the elf journeyed in. So there will be a bunch of historical events related to it. When your dwarves start engraving they'll probably cover your fort with images of that elf.
I had a fort in 40.24 that ended up being practically a shrine to a battle between a marksdwarf and a yeti. Easily 1/3rd of all the hundreds of images and statues in the fort were about their battle. It was the only thing that had ever happened in the region I embarked on before I got there, and they kept obsessively commemorating it even after I made plenty of more interesting history for them to depict.

why is my military training even when the schedule is deactivated?
>>
>>135536119
Militia with nothing better to do will sometimes choose to train in their free time. Sometimes they will even when they do have something better to do. If they have dutiful personality traits or high discipline they're more likely to do so.
If you want them to stop unassign their squad from their barracks, and when their current individual drill jobs complete no more will be taken until they have a barracks reassigned. Make sure to reassign their barracks when they go back on duty. Another way is to give them a station order and lock the door behind them when they leave the barracks, then cancel the order. Or you can deconstruct the furniture their barracks is designated from, but that's kind of a pain in the ass.

When will Toady start working seriously on making DF more user friendly?

First of all, the game needs a mandatory tutorial session for the first time you start playing each game mode. It's really uncool to just leave new players hanging, wondering what to do. It's threatening, and like I said, really uncool.

Second, both modes need a main purpose, and a straight path to get there. When a new player is faced with this big world with all kinds of things to do, it can feel kinda confusing. In order to make new players feel more welcome, Toady should probably cut down on the excess features for a while(perhaps remove distractions like music), and work on streamlining the gamplay, for example by adding a clear goal and ending.
>>
>>135540076
Nah, that was removed in .40. Though dwarves who are on duty all the time will never have an opportunity to fill their social/worship/etc needs, so I guess it was added back in more organic way than military dwarves just getting pissed about their jobs.

bait something into a corridor/room with a puppy/kitten/dwarf/whatever, seal it in with a bridge. or if you time it perfectly you could just drop it on as it walks under it.

then you carve out a block above it, and channel all the edges except one, so that it's basically hovering by just the one floor tile

make sure everyone is clear and away from the block, channel out the last square, splat

>>
>>135570673
3 ways I can think of offhand. You can use pump spam to lower the water level enough to build a wall. You can dig a (closable) outlet that drains the water to a lower z-level faster than it fills the tunnel. Or you can drop magma on it to make an obsidian plug. If you have undug natural walls anywhere above the tunnel you could also engineer a cave in to block the tunnel.
Of those 4 ways, option 2 is probably the easiest and safest.
>>
>>135572742
How would you suggest I drain it? I'm still very new to pumps and mechanics and stuff. I tried building a bunch of walls above a support, then collapsing it on top of my passage, but it didn't work, the walls appeared to have vanished once they hit the ground.
>>
>>135573268
Yeah, constructions just collapse into their constituent materials in a cave in. The wiki article on cave ins is a good resource for learning the quirks of how cave ins behave in different contexts.
If you want to use pumps, just build a ton of them downstream from the opening with some retaining walls to keep the water from washing back into the stream or pushing your dwarves off the pumps. Maybe a channel that leads offmap to give the water somewhere to go (there will be more than you expect).
The easier way I referenced would just be to dig into the tunnel or stream from below. Make a wider tunnel that leads to fortifications on the map edge or into the caverns, and be sure to add floodgates or a raising bridge to block the flow later. Water pressure will cause the water to spread downward instead of horizontally. Your tunnel will drain (eventually) and you'll be able to build whatever you want in it. The only (relatively) difficult part will be making the opening wide enough to drain the water faster than it enters the map. You can use the cave in technique you tried before to do that if you dig cleverly. Hint: cave ins pierce floors that don't have walls below them.
