Actually, Diarmuid was less of a knight and more of a Mercenary, or perhaps a Warrior Poet. The "Knights of Fianna" weren't actually a formal company of knights, rather 'Fianna' is just a general term for a bunch of guys who all have weapons together. Diarmuid's story, along with the stories of the other men in Fionn's company were meant to be fun stories for the populus! Simple heroic spectacular tales that the common folk could think about but not emulate.
To contrast, the story of Cu Chulainn was more for the rich people and the pagan monks to study and spread. And it' shows, because Diarmuid and Cu Chulainn both have a lot of interesting things in common in terms of strength of feats. Also they both named their sons Connla.

He's right about the church fight though, Archer had no intention into winning the fight, just use it as a distraction to kill Caster. He goaded Cu into a strategy that gave Archer a chance of surviving instead of him just getting curbstomped then convinced Lancer to let him go. What Archer did was flat out genius and allowed him to "win" a fight against an objectively superior enemy.
