Yeah it's alright. RPG with Etrian Odyssey battles, has some of the character creation elements too. Has a tower you build and upgrade, unlockable jobs. Alright story. Terrible graphics, average for 3DS.

In EO you have to use binds and counter the boss's two or three instakill attacks of various varieties first through buffs/debuffs.

It's not. EO doesn't have single moves that can win you anything in 2 turns, at least not without doing hundreds of hours of grinding for a min maxed team. In 7th Dragon you literally just pick the move from a list and level it up, done. And don't forget the EX skills.

I bought it and got it Friday. The story is pretty plain but the combat is fun and interesting. All the design between monsters and characters is vibrant and fun, kind of nice to have bright colors for once in a modern RPG. There's a fair amount to upgrade, at least by the start of chapter three. If you like old school turn based RPGs and want something with a twist, I'd say go for it.
Also all these degenerates saying hacker is the best are wrong, Godhand is king of damage and buffs.

What level should I be for Nyala? I'm level 33 with a Godhand, Duelist, and Samurai and I can get him to about half health before he suddenly decides to start playing devil survivor and breathing 100 damage attacks on my party and getting extra turns.

Nope, I remember certain enemies taking more than one partner attack, try making at least two or if possible, three of your characters use their quick attacks while partnered with somebody, so that Nyala doesn't get a chance to use his attack while buffed, since it's his buff which is letting him attack again after killing someone

If their health bar has a shimmer to it that means they have some sort of buff up.
Also you should make other secondaries if only for more partner attacks. Otherwise you're just wasting exp.
What does enmity do? And is it ever worth it?
Also is there a way of checking enemy weaknesses or do you just have to memorize it? Not complaining about it being difficult just for convenience. I don't mind it.

You might not like the sound of this but the DLC seed quest is a great way to grind up SP for new characters, however I would be careful to not kill any bunnies for anything other than getting new characters caught up, only the seeds. The seeds give meh EXP but huge amounts of SP.
I just made two Samurais maxed out their cyclone/whirlwind thing specifically for this purpose.

All the past games except the sequel to 2020 have fan translations. The first 7th Dragon is on the DS, and the sequel 2020 is on PSP. The story is actually somewhat import, they are all tied together with certain characters, but for the most part, they can be played stand alone since this one will explain everything you need to know about the past games. Though since it is a finale to the series, you'll miss out on references and certain scenes just won't have the same impact on you compared to someone that played the whole series.

No, they inflict ailments and have a lot of support skills like physical/magic defense buffs, and can passively restore HP/MN every turn. Just whatever you do, never bother with sacrifice when it becomes available.
