What old game can't you get working? I got pic related working on Win10 with a DIrectX wrapper and a EAX wrapper. Most of the early 3D games can be used with the wrappers I used. Anything before that you got things like DOSbox.

I use XP with Direct X acceleration in a VM with VMware. Have installed dozens of games and the vast majority work without any issues at all.
Way better then messing with dodgy patches that may or may not work for Win 7+.
